Every now and then, a movie comes along with a brilliant idea, and SXSW’s Over Your Dead Body is a perfect example. The film follows a couple, played by Samara Weaving and Jason Segel, who go to a remote cabin hoping to fix their troubled marriage. What they don’t realize is that they’re both secretly plotting to kill each other.
The film also features acclaimed actors Timothy Olyphant, known for his roles in Justified and Alien: Earth, and Juliette Lewis, who stars in Yellowjackets.
TopMob attended the premiere of the film at SXSW 2026 and had the chance to interview the cast and crew, including stars Keither Jardine and Paul Guilfoyle, director Jorma Taccone, and writers Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney. They shared that despite being a horror movie set in a cabin in the woods, Over Your Dead Body will avoid the clichés typically associated with that type of setting.
How ‘Over Your Dead Body’ Isn’t Your Average Cabin In the Woods Horror Movie

“There’s No Other Film Like This.”
- TopMob: “Can you talk about what separates this from the other cabin in the woods type?”
Jorma Taccone believes their work stays connected to reality, and that the funniest moments often come from very genuine, relatable situations. They made a conscious effort to ensure everything felt authentic, so that the humor and the realism would build on each other.
Paul Guilfoyle explained that while this project has a much lower budget, the most important thing about any film is telling a genuine story. Ultimately, a movie will feel real, even if it features unusual characters or a flawed concept. He believes that how authentically a film evokes emotion is what truly sets movies apart.
Keith Jardine believes this film is unique. While it might seem like a typical cabin-in-the-woods story, it’s actually a thrilling, and often bloody, slasher movie. Surprisingly, it’s also funny and has romantic comedy elements, and somehow it all comes together really well. It’s a wild ride that offers a lot of laughs and delivers on multiple levels.
Nick Kocher explains that, unlike typical horror stories, the threat in this story isn’t an external monster. Instead, the main character’s romantic partner is the enemy, and both individuals are equally flawed and dangerous to each other. This makes the story significantly different from others in the genre.
Yeah, the creativity comes from inside our team. We try to blend humor with horror, action, and a bit of the bizarre, and we’re hoping that creates something fresh and different for viewers.
