Ryan Coogler Joins Animorphs Reboot at Disney+

Ryan Coogler is already working on Black Panther 3 and a new version of The X-Files, but he’s also taking on another project: a reboot of a popular show from the 1990s.

Disney+ is bringing back the sci-fi series Animorphs as a new show. Bayan Wolcott will write and executive produce the adaptation, and Michael B. Jordan’s Proximity Media team – including Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian – will also executive produce alongside him.

The publisher of the 54 novels the new series is based on, Scholastic, will also be an executive producer, with Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman leading the production alongside 20th Television studio.

What Is Animorphs About?

Animorphs is a science fiction book series for young adults, created by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant. Over five years, from 1996 to 2001, the authors published a total of 64 books – 54 main novels and 10 companion books. The story is told from the perspectives of six teenage characters – Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, Tobias – and an alien named Ax.

The popular book series Animorphs was turned into a TV show on Nickelodeon in 1998, and it ran for two seasons until 1999. The series featured actors like Shawn Ashmore, Brooke Nevin, Boris Cabrera, Nadia Nascimento, and Christopher Ralph.

The new Disney+ series, Animorphs, is about a group of teens who discover a secret danger hiding in plain sight. They have to deal with this threat while also navigating the typical challenges of being in high school – like relationships and curfews.

A group of teenagers encounters a fatally wounded alien from the Andalite race, who has been battling the Yeerks in a galactic war. The alien grants them the incredible ability to transform into any animal they touch by taking its genetic code. Using this power, they begin a secret fight against the Yeerks to protect Earth. Later, they are joined by Ax, a young Andalite who is stranded on our planet.

The Animorphs book series started with The Invasion, told from the perspective of Jake. It concluded in 2001 with The Beginning.
