The year’s biggest hit is continuing to perform well after becoming available online. It quickly rose to the top of streaming charts in just a few days.
After being released in theaters in December 2025, Avatar: Fire & Ash became available to rent or buy digitally on Tuesday, March 31st. Just two days later, it quickly became the most downloaded movie on Amazon, according to FlixPatrol. It surpassed other popular titles like The Housemaid starring Sydney Sweeney.
The recent streaming performance of Fire & Ash follows a box office run where it earned close to $1.5 billion. While that’s a huge amount, it’s considerably less than the over $2 billion earned by each of the first two Avatar films. Considering how expensive the Avatar franchise is to produce, Fire & Ash‘s box office numbers are good, but not as high as hoped.
I’ve been following this franchise closely, and the latest installment has really stirred things up! Critics gave it a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which feels a little harsh to me. But audiences loved it – a whopping 90% on the Popcornmeter! It’s become pretty common lately for big movies to be totally different experiences for critics versus fans, and this one is definitely part of that trend. I don’t think this will be the last time we see that happen, either.
Fire & Ash’s Streaming Success Is Great News for the Avatar Franchise
James Cameron has often discussed the risky nature of continuing the Avatar movie series. Because each film costs so much to produce, they need to earn significantly more money than most movies just to cover their costs. If a single movie doesn’t perform well enough, it could potentially end the Avatar story before it’s finished.
While Avatar: Fire & Ash did reasonably well in theaters, it didn’t earn as much as the first two Avatar movies. However, its success on streaming platforms is a positive sign for director James Cameron and Disney, demonstrating continued strong interest in the Avatar franchise, even though fewer people saw it in cinemas compared to previous installments.
A fourth Avatar movie is currently planned for release in 2029, marking the 20th anniversary of the original film from 2009. Work has also begun on a fifth movie, expected in 2031. Although it’s been suggested this might be the final Avatar film, director James Cameron has hinted at the possibility of making even more sequels.
While Avatar: Fire & Ash wasn’t the strongest installment in the Avatar series, the franchise isn’t stopping there. Because the latest film is doing well on streaming services, more sequels are planned to continue exploring the world of Pandora.
Avatar: Fire & Ash is available to buy or rent on Prime Video and other PVOD outlets.
