Steve Carell’s Minions: Rise of Gru is Still the Best in the Franchise

I think the Despicable Me franchise is what really launched Illumination into the spotlight. Sure, the studio – which is part of Universal – has become famous for big movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Secret Life of Pets, and Sing, but it was Despicable Me that first showed us just how amazing they could be. I loved how the story focused on the characters, especially Gru – he was a supervillain you couldn’t help but cheer for!

Illumination has consistently released Despicable Me movies over the years, and though none have quite matched the success of the first film, they’ve all enriched the world and developed the characters of Gru and his family. With a fifth Despicable Me movie and another spin-off planned, it’s worth examining a production that has truly reshaped the franchise. In fact, many consider it the best entry in the series since the original.

Minions: The Rise of Gru Is Arguably Better Than The Despicable Me Series

The Minions are the most memorable characters from the Despicable Me films. They’ve become hugely popular with children and are known for their silly, physical comedy. It was natural to create a movie just about the Minions, giving fans more time with these playful, mischievous creatures. The movie did well in theaters, but critics weren’t overly impressed, and many felt it didn’t quite live up to its potential.

When Minions: The Rise of Gru came out, some people wondered if the series could still be successful. However, those worries quickly disappeared once audiences saw the film. The sequel delivered plenty of funny Minion moments, with its slapstick humor really hitting the mark, and it also did a great job of showing how Gru and the Minions became such a close team. Minions: The Rise of Gru was a huge financial success, earning $940.2 million with a production budget of only $100 million, and it received a solid 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film’s success is undeniable, and it’s remarkable considering Minions: The Rise of Gru managed to perform so well without the usual large group dynamic. The movie really focused on what makes the Minions lovable, while still giving each one a distinct personality. This installment is more about the individual Minions and their stories, and that’s what makes it work so well.

The Film Made Up For Its Predecessor’s Errors

With Minions: The Rise of Gru, Illumination took lessons from the first Minions movie. Though the Minions helped make Despicable Me popular, the heart of those films is Gru’s journey and his bond with his adopted children. The original Minions film relied too much on chaotic humor and didn’t capture that same emotional core. The sequel addressed this by putting Gru back at the center of the story in a more meaningful way.

As a big animation fan, I really enjoyed Minions: The Rise of Gru because it truly feels like an origin story. What I appreciated was that it didn’t drag – we quickly see Gru is already set on becoming a supervillain, and he’s got the Minions by his side from the start. He’s actually pretty good at the ‘bad guy’ thing right away, and the addition of Wild Knuckles as an older, experienced villain mentor gave the story a really clear direction and a nice character arc. But it wasn’t all serious – the movie still kept things light and fun, which is exactly what you want from a Minions movie!

What I love about this movie is how it tells a story people actually want to see – Gru’s journey is just so compelling! And it’s brilliant how it still manages to give the Minions plenty of time to shine. It’s definitely worth another watch now that it’s on Netflix and climbing the charts. It really makes you wonder if the next movie, Minions & Monsters, coming out in 2026, will capture the same magic. I’m a little worried the focus on ‘monsters’ might take away from the heart we all loved in Minions: The Rise of Gru. I truly hope they can recreate that special feeling!
