In the near future, television viewers can anticipate more humor-filled mockumentary series gracing their screens in 2025, and it’s not just because St. Denis Medical is coming back for Season 2. The Office spinoff titled The Paper is set to premiere on Peacock, and given the original show’s status as one of NBC’s top-tier sitcoms, this is no small occasion.
The first trailer for The Paper has been released, offering a glimpse into the new characters that will be featured in the Dunder Mifflin documentary series. Oscar Nuñez will be the only returning cast member from The Office. Enjoy the sneak peek!
Before the debut of the trailer, it was revealed that the storyline of the upcoming show will be centered around The Office’s Dunder Mifflin documentary team, who are tasked with reviving a historic Midwestern newspaper. Initially, I thought the creators of The Office might prefer to steer clear of too many references to the original series when marketing the spinoff, but the first trailer suggests otherwise.
Initially, Domhnall Gleeson mentioned that viewers have been drawing parallels between him and Steve Carell’s character Michael Scott from The Office. However, my initial thought was that his character appears more like Jim Halpert (played by John Krasinski). A more balanced perspective might be to refrain from comparing the show and its characters to The Office, and instead wait for the premiere before passing any judgments. As for Oscar, though, it’s fair game.
Oscar Martinez could play a role in the upcoming newspaper events. It’s intriguing to speculate if his character might influence the documentary team’s decision to move from Dunder Mifflin in Scranton to Toledo next. Alternatively, it seems that he may face even more misfortune than in the initial series!
My main curiosity following the trailer revolves around the censored expletive at the end. Since The Paper might have been broadcast on NBC like The Office previously, profanity is generally avoided. However, streaming platforms such as Peacock allow swearing, as evidenced by Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5.
I enjoyed the liberty taken by Organized Crime following its shift from NBC to Peacock, as it pertains to looser language rules. However, The Paper isn’t like Law & Order, and Oscar’s usage of strong language could detract from the authenticity of the documentary footage if uncensored. Regarding whether The Paper allows more profanity than The Office, I believe that, given nine seasons of a documentary crew in Scranton, Oscar deserves the occasional use of strong language.
The highly anticipated premiere of the show is just around the corner, with the initial episodes of Season 1 set to air on Peacock starting September 4. Starring alongside Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Nuñez in this series titled The Paper, you’ll find Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key. Notable figures involved with the production include Greg Daniels from The Office, serving as co-creator, co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer, alongside Michael Koman in similar roles. Additionally, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, who created the original British version of The Office, are credited as executive producers.
To satisfy your craving for the setting of “The Office” while waiting for the debut of “The Paper”, you can stream all nine seasons of the original series on Peacock right away.
