The next project in the Spider-Man live-action franchise is coming with quite a surprise.
Nicolas Cage’s upcoming live-action series, Spider-Noir, is set to premiere next month, and surprisingly, it’s being considered a comedy by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon. According to Variety, the show is now a potential contender for the Emmy Awards in the comedy category.
Industry experts predict the series is a strong contender for a comedy award, alongside popular shows like ABC’s Abbott Elementary, Apple TV+’s Margo’s Got Money Troubles and Shrinking, HBO Max’s Hacks and The Comeback, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, and Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. The new Prime Video show starring Nicolas Cage features Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot as writers, with Spider-Verse creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as executive producers.
As a huge fan, I’m so excited to share the dates! First, voting for the nominations happens between June 11th and 22nd, and we’ll find out who’s nominated on July 8th. Then, the final voting will be open from August 17th to 26th. After that, things really kick off with the Creative Arts Awards and Governors Gala on September 5th and 6th, leading up to the main Emmy Awards ceremony on September 14th, which will be broadcast on NBC. It’s going to be a great season!
Spider-Noir’s Best Comedy Consideration Sparks A Long-Running Debate At Award Shows
The upcoming TV show, Spider-Noir, is sparking a big debate in Hollywood about how to categorize shows for awards. While labeled a comedy, it’s actually a dramatic series, and this raises questions about how studios submit their projects. The show will center on Ben Reilly, not Peter Parker, portraying him as a struggling private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to confront his past as a superhero. Interestingly, he’s known as ‘The Spider’ in this version, not Spider-Man.
The cast of Spider-Noir leans towards a dramatic tone, with villains like Marvel’s Tombstone, Sandman, and Silvermane driving the story. The initial trailer positions the show as a gritty, neo-noir crime series, suggesting it will be primarily dramatic, though it may include some humor. This approach – blending superhero elements with serious drama – isn’t new to television.
Disney+ is positioning Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man for consideration as a comedy series during the upcoming Emmy Awards season. This follows a similar move in November 2023 when Agatha All Along was also submitted as a comedy, as reported by Variety.
Spider-Noir will first launch in the US on MGM+ on May 25th. Then, on May 27th, the complete season will be available globally on Prime Video. Viewers can choose to watch the Marvel series in classic black and white, or in full color.
