‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’ Renewed For Season 2 Ahead of Series Premiere

Even before its release on Disney+, Lucasfilm has planned what’s next for the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord series. Darth Maul first appeared in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace and quickly became a fan favorite. Though he appeared to die in that movie, George Lucas and Dave Filoni brought him back, making him a key character in The Clone Wars and Rebels. Now, Maul is finally getting his own show to lead.

Dave Filoni, who created and executive produced Maul – Shadow Lord and is a co-President of Lucasfilm, has announced that the series will be back for a second season on the official Star Wars website. While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, Season 1 of Maul – Shadow Lord will premiere on Disney+ with two episodes on April 6, 2026. New episodes will air weekly in pairs, leading up to a two-part finale on May 4, 2026 – just in time for Star Wars Day.

In Maul — Shadow Lord, Sam Witwer returns as the voice of Maul, a role he’s previously played in The Clone Wars, Rebels, and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The series also stars Gideon Adlon (Blockers), Dennis Haysbert (24), Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd), and Academy Award nominee Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent). The story follows Maul after the events of The Clone Wars finale, as he tries to rebuild his criminal organization while the Galactic Empire gains power.

Given the success of previous animated Star Wars shows, it makes sense that Maul – Shadow Lord is a multi-part series. The Clone Wars originally aired for five seasons on Cartoon Network, with later seasons appearing on Netflix and Disney+. Star Wars: Rebels ran for four seasons between 2014 and 2018, and The Bad Batch, which came before Maul – Shadow Lord, had three seasons on Disney+ from 2021 to 2024.

2026 promises to be an exciting year for Star Wars fans. After the first season of Maul — Shadow Lord, a The Mandalorian and Grogu movie will hit theaters on May 22, 2026—the first Star Wars film in cinemas since The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019. The second season of Ahsoka is also planned for release sometime in 2026. Although Lucasfilm intends to reduce the number of live-action Star Wars series for Disney+, the continuation of Maul — Shadow Lord indicates that animated Star Wars shows will keep growing.
