The three Avatar movies have been huge commercial hits, earning a total of $6.7 billion worldwide. However, box office success doesn’t guarantee a film is profitable, and a pattern with this series is that each new movie makes less money than the one before it. While the 2025 film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, still earned an impressive $1.5 billion, that’s less than half of what the first Avatar movie made.
Before Fire and Ash came out, director James Cameron said he was prepared to stop making Avatar movies if audiences lost interest, as the films are incredibly demanding to create. Although recent box office numbers haven’t been as strong, producer Rae Sanchini has stated that the team still plans to release Avatar 4 in 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031, according to the latest schedule from The Walt Disney Company.
Speaking with Inverse, Sanchini shared:
We’re currently developing the schedule, which includes budgeting, planning, and setting up our new process for them. We’re making good progress and are fully committed to moving forward.
Okay, so the wait for the next Avatar film, Fire and Ash, thankfully won’t be as long as the thirteen years we suffered between the first Avatar and The Way of Water. James Cameron was smart and filmed parts of the third movie while he was already shooting The Way of Water. It seems like he’s planning to keep that momentum going, and we can probably expect Avatar 4 and 5 to be filmed together too.
The producer acknowledged that the current release dates are subject to change, and the team is working to finalize the production schedule soon.
Fortunately, the team doesn’t have to begin completely from scratch, because Sanchini has already given her feedback on the scripts for the sequels.
“We have the scripts, they’re brilliant … As far as I’m concerned, we’re heading forward.”
The first three movies have really pushed the limits of visual effects, so while fans might be disappointed about the wait for the next installments, it’s also exciting to imagine what director James Cameron will create. He’s known for having a strong, unique vision and rarely compromising, but he recently surprised everyone at the Saturn Awards by saying he’ll actually be listening to audience feedback as he develops the next films.
A major complaint about the series is the length of the movies. The director might be more focused on changing how the stories are told – experimenting with the speed and format of future films – rather than simply giving audiences what they anticipate.
