The Boys season 5 will maintain one major rule as the show heads into its final run of episodes.
During an interview with Liam Crowley of ScreenRant about the upcoming season of The Boys, showrunner Eric Kripke discussed how closely the show’s world aligns with reality. He explained that they strive to make the show’s universe as realistic as possible, essentially portraying our world with the added element of superheroes – a twist that, naturally, creates complications.
According to the creator of Supernatural, a strict rule on the set of The Boys is to avoid any mention of Marvel or DC comics. The show maintains that Vought International is the only source of superheroes in its universe, meaning no references to other superhero franchises. While making pop culture references can be challenging – especially when things like Superman are frequently referenced in modern media – the writers generally try to include as many references as possible, as long as they aren’t from Marvel or DC.
Why Doesn’t The Boys Acknowledge Marvel or DC?
From the beginning, the TV show The Boys has cleverly poked fun at the superhero genre, particularly the massive success of franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the show often references and alludes to Marvel and DC, it’s always avoided directly mentioning those brands within its own universe. Keeping it that way throughout the series is a good thing.
The world of The Boys didn’t need to include DC or Marvel characters – either as actual heroes or as references within the show’s universe. The series has already cleverly parodied those iconic heroes, so adding them directly would have been unnecessary and repetitive. It’s actually more enjoyable for viewers to guess which characters are inspired by, or even intentionally contrast with, well-known figures from DC and Marvel.
How The Boys Differs From The MCU & DCU
Throughout its run, The Boys presents a darkly satirical take on the superhero genre, focusing on how the existence of superpowered individuals would be controlled by corporations and, often, lead to corruption – especially within the elite group, The Seven. Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe and James Gunn’s DC Universe, which prioritize fantastical storytelling, The Boys aims for a sense of realism, making the show’s direction and the risks characters take feel unpredictable.
I’m so excited – The Boys is coming back! Season 5 kicks off with the first three episodes dropping on April 8th, and then new episodes will be released every week, exclusively on Prime Video. Can’t wait!
