Dennis Quaid is on track to star in a new AMC television series.
This actor has taken on diverse roles lately, from playing the lead serial killer in the Paramount+ series Happy Face to a problematic TV producer in the highly praised horror film The Substance. He also portrayed President Ronald Reagan in Reagan, and most recently appeared as a military sergeant alongside Alan Ritchson in Netflix’s action-packed sci-fi movie War Machine.
Dennis Quaid is set to star in Thunder Road, a new NASCAR drama series coming to AMC, according to Deadline. The show is written by John Fusco, who also penned Young Guns and The Highwayman. AMC and Fusco first began developing the series in November 2025. Now that Quaid has joined the project, with writers already at work and NASCAR involved in production, it’s likely the show will be officially greenlit and begin filming this summer.
In the film Thunder Road, Dennis Quaid portrays Duane Whitlock, known as “The Wrecking Ball,” a famous NASCAR driver who built a successful racing dynasty for his family. The movie follows Whitlock as he navigates difficult relationships and the pressures of competition while trying to protect his family’s business and reputation, which are both in danger.
Fusco is not only writing the project but also executive producing it alongside Cliff Roberts and Mark L. Smith, who previously worked together on the Netflix series Untamed starring Eric Bana. Smith has also contributed to films like The Revenant and Twisters, as well as the Netflix series American Primeval. Tim Clark, John Dahl, and Gladys Cheng are producing on behalf of NASCAR.
Dennis Quaid is taking on a leading role in a NASCAR film, continuing his history of starring in sports movies. He’s previously played characters in films like The Rookie, Any Given Sunday, The Express: The Ernie Davis Story, The Long Game, Everybody’s All-American, and American Underdog. Having portrayed athletes and coaches in baseball, football, and golf, Quaid is now set to tackle the world of NASCAR. Beyond sports, he’s known for roles in films such as The Parent Trap, The Day After Tomorrow, Vantage Point, Lawman: Bass Reeves, and The Special Relationship, for which he received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his portrayal of President Bill Clinton.
As a huge cinema and racing fan, I think the success of Brad Pitt’s F1 movie is fantastic news for Thunder Road. Even though NASCAR and Formula 1 are quite different, the buzz around racing in general is way up! That film was a massive hit – nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, with amazing scores on Rotten Tomatoes (82% from critics, 97% from audiences!), and it’s already Apple’s biggest movie ever, earning over $633 million globally. All that positive attention can only help Quaid and Fusco’s new series find an audience.
