Invincible Showrunners Explain Omni-Man’s Return To Earth After 5 Years & Season 4’s Key Comic Book Change

Be warned – major spoilers follow for Invincible season 4, episode 5! The creators of Invincible, Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa, and star Steven Yeun have been discussing the return of Omni-Man.

The creators of Invincible and its main actor have revealed why Omni-Man came back to Earth after five years, and they’ve also discussed a significant change from the original comic book. The latest episode, season 4, episode 5, shows Nolan and Allen arriving on Earth with the goal of getting Mark to join their battle against the Viltrum Empire – even though Nolan used to side with the empire’s destructive forces.

In a recent interview with TheWrap, Steven Yeun and Robert Kirkman discussed how Christopher Nolan’s character will affect Mark in the upcoming fourth season of Invincible. They explained that even though Nolan is trying to make amends, he’s still a Viltrumite, and his terrible actions will continue to have far-reaching consequences. This is particularly true for Mark, whose life has been deeply impacted by everything his father has done.

I think Steven Yeun really gets at something profound when he talks about his father. It seems like it genuinely hurts him to finally understand where his dad was coming from, to realize he might have been a little blind to his father’s point of view before. It’s a tough realization, acknowledging that you might not have fully understood someone so close to you.

We aimed to shed more light on the Viltrumites – a race central to the first three seasons and Mark’s ongoing story. Mark will always be connected to his Viltrumite ancestry, so we wanted to explore their history and show how Nolan’s background influences Mark’s life.

As an actor, it’s interesting how we all embody different roles, essentially becoming the characters within a story and serving the narrative’s purpose. We don’t have much control over that, we just are the character. With Mark, he’s grappling with understanding this, while still holding onto some anger towards Nolan. He’s trying to process everything – it’s a complex mix of emotions and experiences, and it’s hard to put into words. It’s really all of those things combined.

Kirkman explained that Nolan’s apology to Debbie was a deliberate move to show how Debbie’s character was developing. He felt highlighting the conflict in the scene made her perspective more important to the story, and increased her role in the overall narrative.

Debbie’s development stemmed from the work done with Sandra Oh and the effort to expand her character beyond the comic book source material. The comic version of the character wasn’t as developed, and we didn’t fully explore her potential at the time. As we delved deeper into her perspective and the writers added layers to her story, our understanding of what she could do and what she’d be willing to do changed significantly.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see how my work evolves when I adapt it myself and collaborate with such a large group. Witnessing those changes and the improvements they bring makes all the effort worthwhile, and it’s a truly gratifying experience.

How Omni-Man’s Return Will Shape The Rest Of Invincible Season 4

Omni-Man will be back as a key figure in season 4 of Invincible. He’s hoping to make amends for his actions in Chicago and his departure from Earth, and is trying to regain the trust of Mark, Oliver, and Debbie. He also wants to demonstrate his value by joining the Coalition in their battle against Thragg and the Viltrum Empire.

I was so thrilled when Nolan finally convinced Mark to come with us to space! We really needed him in the fight against the Empire, joining the Coalition and everything. But honestly, I was a little worried when Oliver decided to come along too. You could really feel Nolan’s distress – he’s so protective of Mark and just didn’t want anything bad to happen to him out there. He was afraid of accidentally leading his son down a dangerous path, and it was heartbreaking to watch.

This episode seems to be the beginning of Omni-Man’s journey toward making amends. According to Kirkman, a key element was finally utilizing Debbie’s character to fully demonstrate the hurt Nolan inflicted on his family. He’ll have to live with that guilt as the story unfolds and the conflict escalates.

Can Omni-Man Ever Truly Be Redeemed?

Even if good things happen in Invincible season 4, the harm Nolan caused will never be fully undone. Because he’s been the source of so much suffering for the Grayson family since the beginning, it’s hard to imagine him fully making up for his actions. No matter how much he tries to help, it might not be enough to atone for what he’s done.

Nolan has an opportunity to make amends for killing Conquest, depending on how he handles the aftermath and Mark’s severe injury. It’s unclear how he’ll rescue his sons or if Mark will even fully recover from such a devastating wound. However, protecting Mark and ensuring his survival could be Nolan’s path to redemption.

Despite the progress made, there’s still much to be resolved, as the series Invincible has shown with its deliberate pacing of Omni-Man’s journey toward making amends. While Nolan might not be completely forgiven by everyone, like his wife Debbie, he can still demonstrate a desire to contribute positively, even though he can’t change what he’s already done.
