Marvel Studios Confirms First Unplanned MCU Sequel Series

Marvel Studios is known for carefully planning out its movies and Disney+ series. Typically, a show isn’t renewed for another season until the studio has already mapped out its future, like they did with Daredevil: Born Again, which received a third season order before Season 2 even premiered. However, the success of one show, Wonder Man, has changed things. Marvel is breaking its usual pattern and renewing Wonder Man for a second season without having previously planned for it, as the show nearly didn’t make it past the first season.

Many Marvel fans loved the show when all eight episodes dropped earlier this year, calling it a refreshing change of pace. It stood out because it wasn’t focused on typical superhero stories, instead offering a captivating look at the world of filmmaking in Hollywood. The show, Wonder Man, was so popular that Disney+ has decided to make a second season, even though that wasn’t the original plan. Good news continues with the return of creator and showrunner Andrew Guest, director Destin Daniel Cretton, and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley. This marks the first time a Disney+ series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been unexpectedly renewed for another season.

Most Marvel shows on Disney+ that have been renewed for a second season had that renewal confirmed before their first season even finished airing. For example, plans for Loki Season 2 were announced in a post-credits scene at the end of its first season in 2021. What If…? was planned for three seasons from the start, and X-Men ’97 received a Season 2 order before anyone even saw the first season. Even Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was already being developed for Seasons 2 and 3 when it premiered last January.

Before Marvel changed its overall strategy in late 2023, the show Wonder Man wasn’t planned to have more than one season. Brad Winderbaum, who leads Marvel’s streaming content, confirmed this in May of last year, explaining that the studio was going to see how the show performed before deciding if Wonder Man and Ironheart would get additional seasons.

The Disney+ show Wonder Man has a unique premise. It centers around Simon Williams, an actor trying to make it big in Hollywood, but he’s secretly a superhero. Because of a made-up law within the show’s universe – called the “Doorman Clause” – people with superpowers aren’t allowed to work in entertainment, so Simon has to hide his abilities while auditioning for the lead role in a movie, also named Wonder Man.

A highlight of the show is the bond between Williams and Trevor Slattery, the actor who previously pretended to be the villain The Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Even though Slattery has a complicated past within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he unexpectedly becomes a guide and mentor to Williams.

The strong connection between the characters helped the show receive positive reviews and generate buzz, which ultimately led Marvel to renew it for a second season. The first season concluded with Slattery’s arrest by the Department of Damage Control, followed by Simon rescuing him – a great setup for the start of Season 2.

Wonder Man Season 2 Has a Lot of Potential

After Simon Williams’ surprising actions at the end of last season, the Department of Damage Control will be watching him very closely. They’ve been trying to find evidence that he has superpowers, and now they finally have it. This means they’ll pursue him aggressively, considering him a threat to the public. His acting career, which he worked so hard for all season, is now in serious jeopardy. The next season will likely focus on what happens after Simon and Trevor escape from prison.

The show could also delve into the story of Simon’s brother, Eric. Introduced in Season 1 as a responsible and resentful older sibling, Eric disapproved of Simon pursuing a Hollywood career while neglecting his family. We first met him at their mother’s birthday party in Episode 3.

During one episode, Eric and his brother Simon had a major fight, culminating in Simon punching a hole in the kitchen island while their mother watched. It was a really intense moment that highlighted the strained relationship between them. Fans of the comic books know Eric Williams plays the villain, the Grim Reaper, and have been hoping to see that darker side of him on screen. The current storyline suggests Season 2 might finally give viewers what they’ve been waiting for.

Simon rescuing Trevor from prison will make Eric furious, and it could destroy the already shaky relationship between the two brothers. They had recently seemed to be getting along better, even sharing a heartfelt embrace at the premiere of the movie Wonder Man. But that positive moment is now likely to be overshadowed by this betrayal.

Eric will be furious at Simon’s reckless behavior, and their conflict could become very intense. The show will likely delve into how Eric becomes the Grim Reaper, a storyline that’s expected to unfold in Season 2.
