Nicky makes it to the very end of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, and some fans believe he has a different fate than what’s shown. The horror miniseries, created by Haley Z. Boston and co-executive producers the Duffer brothers, quickly gained popularity, with most reviews being positive. The show centers around the terrifying idea of realizing you’ve married the wrong person.
About halfway through the show, Rachel discovers a family curse that affects her wedding. She finds out there are three potential results: if she marries her true love, she’ll live; if she marries the wrong person, she’ll face a violent death; or, she can avoid marriage altogether but pass the curse onto her future husband’s family, becoming the Witness herself.
The finale of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is incredibly tense, with characters facing life-or-death consequences. The last few episodes are full of surprising twists, and a single wedding scene showcases several different possible results. Most surprisingly, Nicky survives. Although there’s a common understanding of what happened, one alternative theory could completely change the meaning of the ending.
Why Rachel Being Nicky’s Soulmate Doesn’t Make Sense
In Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, the idea of soulmates isn’t straightforward, and the connection doesn’t have to be mutual. That’s why Victoria can die while Boris survives – their soulmate connection isn’t a guarantee of shared fate.
Boris endures because he’s aware of Victoria’s imperfections, yet still believes she’s his perfect match. Nell manages to survive because she’s not connected to the family’s history. Jules unexpectedly find they are soulmates – their relationship isn’t flawless, but they genuinely know and accept each other, maintaining both honesty and trust, even amidst disagreements and dislike.
Most fans believe Nicky lives in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen because he’s still in love with Rachel, even though she doesn’t feel the same way. Actor Adam DiMarco explained to ScreenRant that Nicky’s survival “proves that he still believes Rachel’s his soulmate, so he’s a romantic until the very end.”
A recent Netflix Tudum article discussed the characters Nicky, Boris (played by Ted Levine), and Jules (Jeff Wilbusch), suggesting they are all motivated by the belief that they’ve found their soulmates. However, this idea wasn’t directly stated by anyone involved with the show; it appears to be either the writer’s own conclusion or an unconfirmed implication from the cast and crew. It’s unclear where this interpretation originated.
However, Rachel being Nicky’s soulmate makes absolutely zero sense.
Throughout the series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, Nicky consistently disregards Rachel’s feelings and desires. Even before the show began, he pushed her into an engagement despite knowing she didn’t want to get married. If they were truly meant to be together, this wouldn’t have happened.
During their conversation at the diner, he disregarded Rachel’s feelings about not wanting children, brushing off her concerns about pregnancy and childbirth. Later, when they arrived at the house, he decided to retrieve Rachel’s dress simply because his family asked him to, even though she’d made it clear she didn’t want him to.
Upon his return, despite her fear, he immediately doubts her account of events. He prioritizes hearing his family’s perspective, refusing to give her space or reassurance. He also disregards and mocks Rachel’s intuition and beliefs, showing a lack of respect for what she feels is true.
Nicky and Rachel clearly aren’t connecting – he doesn’t seem to understand her, let alone be in love with her. In contrast, Boris and Jules have a deep understanding of their partners, accepting their imperfections and still believing they’ve found their perfect match. Their relationship is strong because it’s based on trust and open communication, something Nicky and Rachel are lacking.
Nicky keeps things from Rachel – he doesn’t tell her about his family or why he was at the airport when they first met, and he pretends to believe in the supernatural when he doesn’t. Rachel, on the other hand, has been upfront with him about who she is and what she’s looking for. Despite her honesty, Nicky secretly doubts what she tells him.
Okay, so Nicky is really frustrating me. He’s doing the exact thing he criticized Rachel’s family for doing – he’s trying to mold Rachel into this perfect bride he’s imagined, and he doesn’t seem to care about who she actually is. Honestly, it feels like he’s not in love with Rachel at all, but with this fantasy version of her he’s built up in his head. It’s a really disappointing turn.
Theory: Nicky Could Be A Second Witness At The End Of Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen
Despite some clear plot holes, Nicky shouldn’t have survived the events in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen – the rest of his family didn’t. And considering how things played out, it’s hard to see Rachel as his destined partner. His survival feels like a mistake, either a plot inconsistency or a logical error.
Another idea about why Nicky survived in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is that he might have become a witness just like Rachel. If Nicky can’t die, it would explain why he avoided the terrible fate of his family.
In episode 4 of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, a previous Witness revealed that Death punished him for abandoning his partner at their wedding. He was made to watch their family endure the same terrible curse he had tried to escape. This shows viewers that Death is spiteful and won’t hesitate to punish anyone who deserves it.
Death subtly manipulated the first woman, deceiving her into a bargain that condemned her descendants to a frightening fate. There’s no indication he’s become any more honest in the centuries since.
To make matters worse, Nicky really angered Death in two ways. First, he abandoned his wedding vows, which is why the previous Witness ended up in that role. Second, he attempted to cheat Death out of the souls he was due by manipulating Rachel into marrying him.
It’s understandable why Death might want to punish him. Also, the fact that he didn’t die before becoming immortal actually fits with how things unfolded.
Rachel’s wedding didn’t happen as planned. Because Nicky broke off the marriage, a terrible curse fell upon his family, and Rachel was tragically fated to become the Witness, a role that meant certain death.
He deceived her into marriage, repeating a painful pattern from her past. However, she ultimately chose to leave, solidifying her identity as the Witness. Considering how things unfolded, it’s logical to conclude that Rachel’s violent death was followed by her transformation into the Witness.
Rachel leaving him at the altar doesn’t mean certain death – it just ruins things with his family. If becoming immortal happened when he walked away, he wouldn’t die a violent death, even if he later married someone he wasn’t meant to be with.
How The Nicky Theory Changes The Meaning Of The Horror Show’s Ending
The idea behind the ‘Nicky Witness’ theory actually supports what Haley Z. Boston said about how the story ends. She explained to Variety that, at its heart, the story is about a breakup. Rachel becoming the new witness represents a fresh start, similar to the emotions felt when ending a relationship – a mix of sadness and relief. It’s a rebirth, and she’s moving on.
This perspective suggests Rachel finds liberation and control by choosing death and being reborn as the observer. It’s her way of escaping the pain caused by Nicky, who betrayed her trust. Her continued existence, now as an immortal, is a positive thing, allowing her to move forward without him.
Nicky is ultimately the one who caused the problem. While he called off the wedding, it wasn’t a deliberate act of selfishness – he was motivated by fear. Interestingly, he immediately tried to reverse his decision as soon as he understood the curse was genuine. Therefore, having him as a Witness in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen would likely be more of a hindrance than a help.
