Titus Welliver reveals whether he’ll appear in Bosch: Start of Watch.
Though Titus Welliver is known for playing Harry Bosch, he hasn’t left the role entirely, as he still appears in the Ballard series. The Bosch story continues with the new prequel Start of Watch on MGM+, which will explore Harry’s early days as a police officer.
During a conversation with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant, Titus Welliver discussed the upcoming Start of Watch prequel and expressed his enthusiasm for it. He mentioned he hasn’t met Cameron Monaghan, who will be portraying a younger Harry Bosch, but shared that Monaghan reached out with a letter, and the two have been communicating.
Welliver has stated he isn’t a producer on Start of Watch and won’t be playing an older version of Bosch in flashback scenes, calling the show a completely separate story. However, he emphasizes that fans of Bosch and Legacy will still enjoy the new MGM+ series, largely because many of the same people who worked on those shows are involved.
I’m really looking forward to ‘Start of Watch,’ and I’m thrilled for everyone working on it. I haven’t met Cameron face-to-face yet, but we’ve exchanged letters – he actually sent me a wonderfully kind and thoughtful one! I didn’t want to interfere with filming, especially since I’m not a producer on the show. It’s a completely separate story, and there won’t be any scenes jumping forward in time or featuring an older Harry. It will be great for fans of ‘Bosch’ and ‘Bosch: Legacy’ to see Bosch as a young officer. Thankfully, the same talented team is leading the way. Tom Bernardo and I were closely involved with ‘Bosch,’ and the showrunner is fantastic. He’s an incredible writer with a deep understanding of the source material and a real grasp of the character and his world. It’s in very capable hands, and I’m just as excited as everyone else for it to come out!
What Will Bosch: Start of Watch Be About?
The new series, Bosch: Start of Watch, will star Jason Monaghan, known for his work on Shameless and Gotham. The show takes place in Los Angeles in 1991 and focuses on a young Harry Bosch, just beginning his career as a police officer. While based on the Harry Bosch character created by Michael Connelly, the story isn’t adapted from any specific book or previous work.
The new film delves into a city struggling with racial divides, gang problems, and issues within the police department itself. As things escalate, Harry finds himself caught up in a major robbery and a web of police corruption. This will test his dedication to the force and ultimately influence the detective he will become.
The cast of Bosch: Start of Watch features Omari Hardwick (from Power) as Eli Bridges, who mentors Bosch. Ariana Guerra, known for CSI: Vegas, plays Rosa, a new officer who might become a love interest. JD Pardo, previously in Mayans MC, stars as Cory, a professional thief and Harry’s adopted brother.
The new series is created by the same team behind Bosch and Bosch: Legacy. Fabel Entertainment is producing, with Tom Bernardo – who co-developed and executive produced Bosch: Legacy – taking on the role of co-creator and showrunner. Brian Anthony, also from Bosch: Legacy, is an executive producer. Filming is currently underway in Los Angeles, but a release date on MGM+ hasn’t been announced yet.
Bosch: Start of Watch Could Still Bring In Welliver Later On
Whether or not Harry will reappear depends on how well the new prequel does. Either way, Welliver is still working with MGM+ because he’s starring in their upcoming crime drama, The Westies, which premieres on July 12th.
For now, Bosch: Start of Watch offers Monaghan the exciting opportunity to be the lead actor in a series for the first time in his twenty-plus year career. It’s a good idea to let him define his own interpretation of the character right from the start.
