The Wheel of Time is back with more stories, and this time it could face strong competition from another major fantasy series.
Prime Video has cancelled its TV series Wheel of Time after just three seasons. Although the show’s quality compared to other fantasy series is debatable, it was beginning to improve and reach its full potential. The third season was the strongest yet, and seemed to promise a good future for the story, making the cancellation surprising.
As a big fantasy fan, I’m really bummed to hear that Prime Video isn’t planning a fourth season of The Wheel of Time. It seems they’re stopping after season 3. But, the good news is the story isn’t over completely! They’re apparently planning to keep the world alive in other ways, and it sounds like they might even be going head-to-head with another huge fantasy series, which is exciting!
Both Wheel Of Time & The Cosmere Universe Books Are Getting TV & Movie Adaptations
As a huge fan of The Wheel of Time, I was really disappointed to hear the live-action show was cancelled. But it sounds like things aren’t over! I’m hearing that the franchise is coming back strong with a new animated series, a video game, and even some animated movies. Apparently, Anthony Borquez from Initiate Entertainment, along with Rick and Larry Selvage from iwot, are all working together to keep the story alive on screen, and they’re promising the cancellation of the live-action show won’t be the end of it.
Since the live-action series wasn’t attracting enough viewers despite its expensive production, it’s understandable that they’re now using animation to continue the story.
It’s not just Wheel of Time getting both movie and TV adaptations; Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere books are also headed to Apple TV in the same format. While details are still under wraps, these adaptations will probably be live-action.
Brandon Sanderson is also known for completing the Wheel of Time book series after its original author, Robert Jordan, passed away. Jordan’s wife and editor, Harriet McDougal, approached Sanderson to finish the series.
Both The Wheel of Time and Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere books are receiving new adaptations for film and television, potentially creating an interesting competition between the two franchises despite being created by the same author. While it’s unclear if Sanderson will be involved with the animated Wheel of Time series, Apple TV has reportedly given him a significant amount of creative control over the upcoming adaptations of his Cosmere Universe books.
According to recent news, both The Starlight Archive and Mistborn are heading for adaptation. The Starlight Archive is being developed as a TV series with Brandon Sanderson as a co-showrunner, and Mistborn will be made into a movie, with Sanderson writing the screenplay.
The New Wheel Of Time Adaptations Must Learn 1 Lesson From The Prime Video Live-Action Show’s Mistake
The Prime Video series adapting Brandon Sanderson’s The Wheel of Time brought him on as a consultant, but he later told Collider that his input wasn’t really used during production. He explained that his involvement was mostly for marketing purposes – to add credibility to the show.
Unlike Amazon’s adaptation of The Wheel of Time, Brandon Sanderson will have a lot of creative say in Apple TV’s upcoming series based on The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn. In fact, reports indicate that even authors as famous as J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin didn’t have this much control over the TV and film versions of their own books.
Brandon Sanderson’s close work on bringing his Cosmere universe to the screen is a promising sign for the Apple TV series. Meanwhile, Prime Video has a great chance to improve on previous adaptations by collaborating directly with Sanderson on their new movies and shows.
We hope Prime Video’s new take on The Wheel of Time is successful and continues for many seasons.
