The news that the Buffy reboot was canceled couldn’t have come at a more disappointing moment. On the same day director Chloé Zhao was nominated for an Oscar for Hamnet, Sarah Michelle Gellar announced that Hulu had decided against moving forward with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, which would have featured a new slayer in a town called New Sunnydale. Although the decision was widely disliked and will probably be remembered negatively for a long time, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s status as a beloved scream queen and pop culture icon remains strong.
Fans will be happy to hear that the actor from Scream 2 is back! This critically acclaimed sequel, released seven years after the first film, delivers all the thrills you’d expect. It’s a more intense and gruesome experience, guaranteeing a good time for horror lovers.
Sarah Michelle Gellar Steals the Show in Ready or Not 2
The first Ready or Not film had a satisfying conclusion, so changing it would have been risky. Fortunately, Ready or Not 2 continues the story right after the original ends, and it works well. Following Grace’s clever escape from the dangerous Le Domas family, she finds herself immediately thrown into yet another terrifying, high-stakes game.
The sequel, Ready or Not 2, smartly avoided simply repeating the first film’s ideas and instead took the story to a new level. This was largely thanks to the introduction of the Danforth family – powerful and sinister figures who lead a cult – and their son, who inherits a significant part of their dark legacy.
Ursula and her dangerously unstable brother, Titus, are both determined to kill Grace in order to take control of the High Seat. Ursula, often seen as the opposite of Buffy, is deeply involved in her family’s devil-worshipping cult and believes she and Titus deserve to rule the world.
Gellar perfectly captures Ursula’s joyful energy while expertly wielding a large, old-fashioned weapon. This is the kind of role that fans of Buffy have been hoping to see her in. She’s fantastic. Just as the reboot was cancelled, Ready or Not 2 provides the exciting and uplifting experience fans were craving.
Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton deliver strong performances as sisters struggling to survive, and their challenging situation also helps them mend their relationship. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return to the role reminded viewers of what they loved about her work, and her portrayal of Ursula was surprisingly complex and moving, offering more than just lighthearted entertainment.
Ready or Not 2 Had All the Hallmarks of a Good Buffy Episode
Honestly, when I heard Sarah Michelle Gellar was doing a funny horror movie, I was so excited – 2026 really needed it! And the villain, Ursula, wasn’t just some cardboard cutout; she was actually a fully developed character with her own story that we got to see play out. Sarah Michelle Gellar, as always, brought so much emotion and even a touch of sadness to her role, even though she was technically chasing Grace around for the devil! It was a surprisingly layered performance.
I found myself really captivated by Ursula’s arc in this film. Initially, she seems like a team player, but it quickly becomes clear that her brother, Titus, is just too erratic to be reliable – a real liability, honestly. Like Andie MacDowell’s character in ‘Mrs. Le Domas,’ which is getting a lot of buzz on Hulu, Ursula is far more complex than she initially lets on. It’s fascinating because neither she nor Mrs. Le Domas actually dislikes Grace, but the disturbing reality of their devotion means that doesn’t matter at all – their choices are dictated by something much darker, and no one seems able to acknowledge the humanity underneath.
Let’s be real, the core of this story is about actually worshipping the devil, and it needed an actress who could sell that internal conflict. Honestly, I wasn’t sure anyone could make it believable, but Sarah Michelle Gellar completely blew me away. She has this incredible ability to take even the most straightforward scene and transform it into something deeply emotional and affecting. It’s a truly powerful performance.
It’s a shame the original film wasn’t fully appreciated, but the exciting sequel, Read or Not 2, lives up to the hype and doesn’t rely on past success. This film is likely to be as memorable as the first, powerfully highlighting the bonds of sisterhood and demonstrating that even well-meaning actions can have disastrous consequences.
