An underrated CBS sitcom is finding new life on Netflix.
The show is popular thanks to a deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. Television, the company that makes comedies like Young Sheldon, Two and a Half Men, and Mom. These CBS shows have found a new audience on Netflix, and now another one has joined them.
I’m so glad everyone’s discovering Mike & Molly! It’s one of my comfort shows, and it’s been climbing the charts on Netflix since it was added on March 26th. As of today, it’s already at number nine in the U.S. – up from number ten! It’s great to see this funny show with Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell getting the love it deserves.
Why Is Mike & Molly Underrated?
Premiering in September 2010 and concluding in May 2016, Mike & Molly followed the relationship of police officer Mike Biggs (played by Billy Gardell) and schoolteacher Molly Flynn (Melissa McCarthy). They met at an Overeaters Anonymous group, and the series showed how their connection grew over time.
Let me tell you, Mike & Molly had a seriously talented ensemble – Reno Wilson, Katy Mixon, Nyambi Nyambi, and even Swoosie Kurtz, just to name a few. The show, created by Mark Roberts, actually racked up two Emmys, including one for Melissa McCarthy’s fantastic lead performance. But honestly, despite all the awards, it never quite got the recognition it deserved. That became pretty obvious when CBS decided to cancel it – a move that apparently even shocked McCarthy herself. It’s a shame, really, because it was a genuinely funny show with a lot of heart.
While Mike & Molly wasn’t as massively popular as shows like The Big Bang Theory or Two and a Half Men, its recent popularity on streaming services shows that the connection between the two main actors still resonates with audiences.
Why Is Mike & Molly Taking Off On Netflix?
Similar to the other shows we’ve discussed, Mike & Molly was created by Chuck Lorre, a highly experienced television producer. Lorre is known for developing comedies that can run for many seasons and episodes. Combined with the strong chemistry between the actors and Melissa McCarthy’s excellent performance, the show’s large number of episodes makes it appealing to streaming services.
Netflix likely partnered with Lorrre through the show Leanne. It stars Leanne Morgan and follows a woman whose life changes dramatically after her husband leaves her for a younger woman. The 16-episode sitcom has been renewed for a second season, but still has a ways to go to match the long run of shows like Mike & Molly.
