New photos from the set of The Last of Us season 3 show the character Lev and confirm that Abby will be returning.
Filming for the third season of the post-apocalyptic series has begun in British Columbia, Canada, nearly a year after the second season concluded on HBO. The new season will primarily follow Abby’s story, and will also introduce new faces, including the character of Lev, a transgender teen, who will be played by Kyriana Kratter.
Recent on-set photos shared by @giannisstape (via canadagraphs) show Kaitlyn Dever and actor Kratter filming in British Columbia. Dever, playing the character Abby, is wearing a blue jacket, brown pants, and a backpack. Kratter, as Lev, is seen walking behind her with a quiver of arrows on his back.
One picture shows Abby pausing to examine a black beanie, while another captures her descending a stationary ladder.
New photos from the set show the showrunners are committed to matching the look of the video game character Lev. Both the character and the actor playing him, Kratter, have shaved heads.
In the video game The Last of Us, Lev and his sister Yara are members of a group called the Seraphites. They meet Abby, and Lev especially becomes important to her story as a soldier in the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). Michelle Mao, who appears in Bridgerton, will portray Yara.
Kratter’s latest casting choice has faced some backlash. The character Lev, who is a transgender boy, was previously voiced by a transgender actor, Ian Alexander, in the games. However, the new voice actor is a cisgender girl.
Before landing the role of Lev in The Last of Us, Kratter was known for her part as KB in the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. She also had roles on Disney Channel’s Bunk’d and the CBS sitcom United States of Al.
Season 3 of The Last of Us will likely follow Abby’s story. The first two seasons focused on Ellie and Joel Miller. Abby appeared as the primary villain in season 2, driven by a desire for revenge after Joel killed her father to protect Ellie.
In the second episode, Abby and Joel finally met, but their encounter quickly turned violent, with Abby shooting and severely beating Joel. Ellie, who had become close to Joel throughout the series, was devastated as she witnessed his death.
The second season of The Last of Us concluded with a shocking scene: Abby pointing a gun at Ellie. The episode ended with a gunshot, leaving viewers uncertain about who, if anyone, was hit. Immediately after, the show flashed back to the beginning of Abby’s story in Seattle, with the title “Seattle: Day One” appearing on the screen.
Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, Isabela Merced, Jeffrey Wright, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Clea DuVall, Patrick Wilson, and Jason Ritter all star alongside Dever and Kratter in The Last of Us.
Filming for season 3 of The Last of Us started in early March, and while there’s no official release date yet, HBO expects the new season to premiere in 2027.
