It’s recently become popular again on streaming platforms, likely to build excitement for the upcoming reboot.
The first Harry Potter film, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (known as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States), came out in 2001 and was based on J.K. Rowling’s popular 1997 book. It launched a huge franchise that now includes seven more movies, three additional films set in the same world, numerous video games, theme park attractions, and a new TV show. According to FlixPatrol, it’s currently the most popular title on HBO Max worldwide.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Kicked Off a Magical Ride
The fantasy movie launched Daniel Radcliffe as the main character, an 11-year-old boy who learns he’s a famous wizard and starts attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to learn magic.
The first Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, featured a combination of fresh faces and established stars. Young actors like Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint (as Ron Weasley), Emma Watson (as Hermione Granger), and Tom Felton (as Draco Malfoy) starred alongside beloved British and Irish actors including Warwick Davis, Fiona Shaw, Julie Walters, and the late Richard Harris, Richard Griffiths, Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, and Maggie Smith.
Chris Columbus, known for directing Home Alone, directed the fantasy film, and Steve Kloves wrote the screenplay. Several other directors, such as Steven Spielberg and Rob Reiner, were also considered for the job. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone became a huge success, earning over $1 billion worldwide on a $125 million budget.
The film series earned over $7.77 billion globally on a budget of about $1.15 billion, making it one of the most financially successful movie franchises ever made.
Harry Potter’s Resurgence Comes at the Best Time
The recent buzz around the first part of the new eight-episode adaptation of the seven Harry Potter books started last Wednesday when HBO Max launched in the UK and released a first look at the upcoming series. The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is being described as a more accurate retelling of the original story.
The upcoming series will star a brand new cast. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, and Arabella Staunton and Alastair Stout will join him as the other two members of the main trio. John Lithgow will take on the role of Professor Dumbledore, and Janet McTeer will play Professor McGonagall.
The upcoming series faces hurdles, including the casting of Black actor Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and the fact that it’s been over a decade since the last movie. Despite these challenges, the films remain incredibly popular around the world, proving their enduring appeal.
The first movie will be shown in select theaters – at Cosm locations in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Dallas – starting May 7th. The new HBO series is scheduled to premiere on Christmas.
Okay, so this show? It’s definitely sparked a lot of debate – people either seem to love it or really dislike it. But you can’t deny it’s been a huge success, breaking viewership records on multiple platforms. What’s really interesting is the creators are being very careful about how much the young actors age between seasons; they’re actively trying to maintain a consistent look for the child characters, which is a smart move.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is streaming on HBO Max.
