Even though these TV shows aren’t widely famous, that doesn’t make them any less good. Treason

Given how much Netflix promotes its action and thriller shows, it’s surprising to find a truly great one that didn’t receive a lot of hype. Treason is a fast-paced series starring Charlie Cox (from Daredevil) as Adam Lawrence, an MI6 agent suddenly promoted when his boss is nearly killed – a plot orchestrated by a former lover.

With only five episodes, the Netflix series Treason quickly dives into its central story. It delivers all the classic elements of a spy thriller – action, betrayal, and intense power plays – but what really sets it apart is its main character, Adam. He’s not the typical polished spy we often see.

He’s far from perfect – he struggles with inner conflicts and sometimes makes the wrong choices. However, it’s precisely these flaws that make him so likable. He reminds us that even highly skilled spies are still human and capable of error.

Tires

2024-Present, 2 Seasons (Ongoing)

This incredibly funny series, created by Shane Gillis, Steve Gerben, and John McKeever, deserves to be much more well-known. Tires centers around Will (Gerben), who manages Valley Forge Automotive Center. He’s full of ideas for turning the struggling shop around, but his employees often dismiss them.

The comedy series Tires works so well because it feels very real. It avoids relying on shock value or offensive jokes, finding humor instead in the everyday struggles of a manager dealing with a messy workplace. A key to its success is the excellent writing – the dialogue is fast-paced, clever, and genuinely funny. It’s no surprise then that Tires has been picked up for a third season, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.

Cuckoo

2012-2019, 5 Seasons

Before landing on Netflix, Cuckoo originally aired on BBC Three in 2012. The first episode was the network’s most popular comedy debut, and it’s easy to see why. Even though the show starred comedy star Andy Samberg and was a hit in the UK, its arrival on Netflix didn’t make much of a splash.

The comedy revolves around Cuckoo, a carefree and unreliable man who throws a typical family’s life into chaos when he marries their daughter. The show isn’t afraid to be bold and its humor often comes from the clashes between Cuckoo and his new father-in-law.

The British comedy Cuckoo is a hidden gem that ran for five seasons. In season two, Taylor Lautner took over the lead role from Andy Samberg, playing the character who’s new to the family’s wild lifestyle. Despite the cast change, the show kept its signature brand of hilarious chaos right up to the finale. There was talk of an American version at one point, but it never happened.

Giri/Haji

With the growing popularity of international shows on Netflix, it’s surprising that more people haven’t discovered Giri/Haji. The series, which means Duty/Shame in English, centers around Kenzo Mori (played by Takehiro Hira), a Tokyo detective who travels to London to find his brother, Yuto. Yuto is suspected of involvement in the murder of a yakuza member, meaning he’d be in danger for the rest of his life even if found alive.

A key strength of Giri/Haji is its dual perspective, telling the story from both Tokyo and London. This allows viewers to experience the show in multiple ways, creating a rich and complex narrative. The series also prioritizes character development alongside its central mystery, giving it depth and preventing it from feeling simplistic.

The Rain

While shows like 3 Body Problem, Stranger Things, and Love, Death + Robots are Netflix’s biggest sci-fi hits, The Rain is a fantastic, often overlooked series that rivals them in quality. This Danish show follows siblings Simone and Rasmus as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world devastated by a virus spread through rainfall, which wiped out most of humanity.

Like many science fiction shows, The Rain is both thrilling and thought-provoking, offering a glimpse into potential future scenarios. Gypsy

As a movie and TV buff, I was completely drawn in by Gypsy. Netflix’s series Maniac is a unique and surprising sci-fi show. Starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill as Annie and Owen, it follows their participation in a drug trial designed to address their emotional and mental health issues.
