Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film, The Godfather, based on Mario Puzo’s novel, dramatically changed the landscape of cinema. With iconic performances from Al Pacino and Marlon Brando, it redefined gangster movies. To this day, filmmakers working in the genre are still inspired by and try to emulate the Corleone family’s story and the film’s lasting impact.
Although The Godfather is widely considered a masterpiece and one of the best crime films ever made, a few others are arguably even better. These films either influenced its style for modern audiences or successfully combined its elements with different genres, making a strong case for being the greatest crime story ever told. While opinions always vary, three movies in particular stand out as serious contenders to the title.
Goodfellas Surpassed the Vision of The Godfather
Martin Scorsese’s 1990 film, Goodfellas, was based on Nicholas Pileggi’s book Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family. The movie is a dramatized version of Henry Hill’s life as he climbs the ranks of the Italian mob, forming close bonds with Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito. Although Henry never becomes a fully initiated member, his important position puts him at the heart of key events in the Mafia’s history, both its successes and its decline.
While The Godfather brought the gangster film back to life in 1972, Goodfellas did the same for cinema in 1990, becoming a cinematic equal to Coppola’s classic. Unlike the earlier film, which focused on family dynamics within the Mafia, Scorsese’s movie offered audiences a rare, up-close look at the day-to-day realities of Mafia life. Even more remarkably, it delivered some of the most memorable and impactful scenes in Hollywood history.
No Country For Old Men Perfected the Neo-Western Crime Movement
The film No Country for Old Men centers on Llewelyn Moss, a Vietnam veteran and hunter in Texas, who discovers a suitcase full of money after a violent drug deal gone wrong. When he’s seen taking the money, a cold-blooded assassin named Anton Chigurh is sent after him. Their dangerous pursuit creates a gripping and unsettling crime story that is considered one of the most intense of the 21st century.
Winning four Oscars in 2007, the film joined titles like There Will Be Blood and 3:10 to Yuma in marking a resurgence of Westerns. It demonstrated the genre’s continued appeal, proving it could successfully host gritty crime narratives rather than just traditional dramas or grand epics.
When Westerns were falling out of favor, the Coen Brothers revitalized the genre with their film based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel, making it popular again in Hollywood. Javier Bardem’s chilling performance as the villain, Chigurh, made the movie particularly unforgettable. For fans of crime films with a Western feel, No Country for Old Men is a standout choice.
Chinatown Elevated the Murder Mystery Genre Forever
The story follows Jake Gittes, a detective in the 1930s, when a woman hires him to investigate her husband. Things get complicated when the husband’s actual wife appears, revealing the first woman was not who she seemed. After the husband is murdered, his widow, Evelyn, and Gittes are forced to work together to uncover the truth behind the deception and find the killer.
This movie intentionally aims to unsettle, shock, and provoke viewers, and it succeeds. Paying homage to classic films like The Maltese Falcon, it followed in the footsteps of The Godfather by rejecting modern crime narratives and instead incorporating a historical setting into its story.
As a huge movie fan, I always say Chinatown perfectly captures that gritty, pessimistic vibe of 1970s cinema. It really kicked off the neo-noir movement in Hollywood. Instead of focusing on mobsters, it’s a brilliant example of the classic hardboiled detective story, and honestly, it gave Jack Nicholson one of his best-ever roles. It shares a similar dark world with films like The Godfather, but what I love about Chinatown is that its incredibly clever script and compelling mystery just pull you in and keep you guessing.
