‘Lights Out 2’ Is Finally, Officially in the Works

Despite a long wait, a sequel is finally in the works for one of the most successful horror movies of 2016.

I’m so excited to hear that New Line is finally working on a sequel to Lights Out! That movie was a huge hit – it made over $150 million worldwide on a tiny budget of less than $5 million, which is incredible! It was David F. Sandberg’s first feature film as a director, and it started as a short film he made. The story really got to me – it’s about a woman named Rebecca who has to face some scary things from her past when her stepfather dies and it brings up old trauma for her mother, and it puts her little brother in danger. I’m really looking forward to seeing what they do with the sequel!

Not only was Lights Out a financial success, earning back its production costs many times over, but it also received positive reviews. It was unexpected that the studio didn’t immediately start working on a sequel, given how quickly popular horror movies often launch franchises. It’s even more surprising they’re revisiting the idea now. However, this doesn’t seem like a sequel just for the sake of it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, many of the original creative team, including director David Sandberg and screenwriter Eric Heisserer, are returning as producers for Lights Out 2.

James Wan and Lawrence Gray, who were both involved in the first Lights Out film, are also producing the sequel. It’s currently unknown if any of the original actors will be back, but the screenwriter has been announced. Connor Osborn McIntyre, a rising talent, will be writing the script. He recently co-wrote Animals, an upcoming film directed by and starring Ben Affleck, about a politician facing a crisis when his son is kidnapped – a situation that could reveal damaging secrets. Affleck and Billy Ray also co-wrote the screenplay for Animals with McIntyre.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Drew McIntyre is also working on American Midnight, a screenplay previously featured on the Black List and now owned by Netflix, and a project called Copenhagen. He’s joining Lights Out 2 after several other writers tried and failed to develop a compelling sequel, including Eric Heisserer and Christopher Borrelli. Borrelli is known for the action thriller Dangerous, starring Scott Eastwood and Mel Gibson, and the horror film The Vatican Tapes.

New Line Cinema has officially greenlit Lights Out 2, just months after director David Sandberg suggested a sequel was possible. Sandberg, who has since directed Shazam! and Annabelle: Creation, mentioned the potential for a follow-up last fall at Midnight Fest, saying, “There’s a chance… We’ll see.” It seems he had inside knowledge all along.
