House Of The Dragon Star’s 8-Part Netflix Action Series Is The Perfect Watch For Sci-Fi Fans

Many fans recognize Sonoya Mizuno from her work as Mysaria in House of the Dragon, but she also had a notable role as an animated character in a classic science fiction series. Unlike some sci-fi shows that rely on quiet storytelling, the Terminator franchise is known for its action and spectacle.

The Terminator series is known for its explosive action, dark futuristic settings, and, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger. While many fans worried that new Terminator stories without Schwarzenegger wouldn’t be as good, Terminator Zero shows that’s not true. It’s a fantastic and often overlooked sci-fi series now available on Netflix.

How Terminator Zero Ties Into The Terminator Franchise

The story of the Terminator films has become quite tangled over the years. After the success of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, later movies attempted to correct plot holes and inconsistencies, but often made things more complicated and weren’t very well-received. They struggled to recreate the feel of the original two films. However, the recent animated Terminator installment has been more popular with fans.

I’m really enjoying Terminator Zero – it feels like a fresh take on the series! So many of the sequels have leaned too heavily on Arnold Schwarzenegger, but this one actually tries something new. It finally addresses the storyline issues that have been holding the Terminator franchise back since Judgment Day. Instead of just having a Terminator protect someone, it’s a real conflict between humans and artificial intelligence, and that’s much more interesting.

Terminator Zero addresses a key question about time travel in the Terminator series: when someone goes to the past or future, it doesn’t alter the original timeline, but instead creates a new one. This is a significant development that opens up possibilities for future Terminator stories, essentially creating a multiverse where Judgment Day has played out in many different ways – sometimes happening, sometimes being avoided, and sometimes being altered. This change helps to make sense of events throughout the entire franchise.

Most of Terminator Zero is set in 1997, directly connecting it to the first Judgment Day. However, the ending reveals that Judgment Day isn’t what everyone thought it was. The story also leaves the door open for a second season, bringing back the excellent cast, including Timothy Olyphant, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rosario Dawson.

Why Terminator Zero Was Canceled After One Season

Although season 2 of Terminator Zero had the potential to explore the origins of John Connor and how he became a legendary leader of the Resistance, it wasn’t meant to be. Despite receiving positive reviews and a higher critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes than any other Terminator project since Terminator 2, the show was unfortunately canceled after only one season.

Mattson Tomlin, the creator of Terminator Zero, announced on X that the show has been cancelled. He explained that while the show received very positive reviews and resonated with viewers, not enough people tuned in. The cancellation of Terminator Zero is disappointing, but unfortunately aligns with Netflix’s tendency to end promising shows prematurely.

As a critic, I’m always a little frustrated when Netflix doesn’t explain why they cancel a show, but it seems like low viewership is the reason here, and that’s going to sting for fans. It’s a shame, because some sci-fi series build an audience over time, and Terminator Zero had potential – people were calling it the best new take on the franchise. It was a bold move, though, switching to animation and trying something different with the familiar Terminator formula. It just didn’t seem to connect with enough viewers.

Currently, Terminator Zero tells its own complete story, but the actors involved have some interesting things coming up. Olyphant will be in Lucky and The Five-Star Weekend, and Mizuno is making her first film as a director this year. Given how great Mizuno was as the character Eiko, a future Terminator project could potentially bring her back, making Terminator Zero a fresh start for the series.
