The latest trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu confirmed rumors that Embo, the intimidating Kyuzo bounty hunter from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, will be appearing in the new season. He briefly appears around the one-minute mark, silhouetted in the darkness, as a Hutt threatens Din Djarin with a grim warning: “You will suffer, and then it will be his turn.”
Embo, a visually impressive character from The Clone Wars, is back, but he’s changed. He’s lost the one thing he always relied on – a tool that was also his greatest strength.

Throughout The Clone Wars, Embo was almost always with his Anooba companion, Marrok. Marrok wasn’t just a pet; he was like an extension of Embo himself – a fiercely loyal and well-trained hunting animal who fought alongside him, acting as both a weapon and a defense.
Anoobas are naturally social creatures, similar to wolves, and were specifically bred to be fierce predators. Marrok was considered the most skilled of these creatures. He greatly enhanced Embo’s fighting ability, making the bounty hunter even more dangerous than he already was with his signature hat-shield and bowcaster. However, by the time of The Mandalorian & Grogu, Marrok had been dead for quite some time.
Chuck Wendig’s novel, Aftermath: Empire’s End, touches on this when bounty hunter Jas Emari encounters Embo while fleeing the temple of Niima the Hutt. She had been captured by Mercurial Swift and delivered there as a prisoner. Jas and Embo have a shared past – he used to work with her aunt’s crew. During their uneasy meeting, Jas asks if Marrok is still around. Embo replies that Marrok has been dead for several years.
This conversation establishes that Marrok died many years before the events of The Mandalorian & Grogu begin. By the time Embo is tracking Din Djarin for the Hutts, Marrok has been dead for a long time.
Embo does have a new animal companion in the film. Briefly seen at the 0:59 mark of the trailer, this creature seems to take the place of his former Anooba, Marrok. While details are limited, it looks like Embo either replaced Marrok or found a new ally to fight alongside him.
It’s still uncertain if Embo’s new creature will be as fierce and effective in battle as his former companion, Marrok. Embo and Marrok developed a strong partnership over many years fighting together during the Clone Wars, and it will be difficult to recreate that with a new animal. Plus, Embo hasn’t fought in years, so his new companion might not have the same battle-tested connection he shared with Marrok.
How Important Was Marrok to Embo?

To figure out what Embo lacks, it’s important to remember what Marrok offered. During The Clone Wars, Marrok wasn’t just a strong fighter. He located targets, attacked enemies from the sides during battles, and intimidated opponents, giving Embo a significant advantage.
Most enemies couldn’t handle fighting both the bounty hunter and his companion at the same time. Marrok effectively turned Embo from a strong solo fighter into a dangerous duo.
The Scipio mission really highlights how Embo and Marrok worked together as a team. Embo was initially hired to intimidate Rush Clovis, but the situation became more complex with Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker also being there.
To stop their escape, Embo disabled the ship, preventing them from flying away, and forced all three targets to the snowy ground. He then chased after them down the mountainside, using his hat as a sled and firing his bowcaster as he went.
Marrok created a diversion, guiding their targets into a position where Embo could reach them, and then managed to escape on a ship. This escape didn’t disrupt Embo’s overall plan; it went exactly as intended.
Everything unfolded exactly as Palpatine intended. He simply wanted Clovis removed from the picture as he pursued his goals with the Banking Clan. Embo and Marrok successfully carried out the plan, and afterward, Marrok picked up Embo’s hat from the snow, showing how well they collaborate as a team.
Embo’s Return in Mandalorian & Grogu Is a Big Deal
Embo’s arrival in The Mandalorian & Grogu is similar to how Cad Bane was first shown in live-action in The Book of Boba Fett. Both characters are popular bounty hunters who originally appeared in The Clone Wars animated series and are now being introduced to a wider audience. Cad Bane’s appearance successfully brought him to the attention of fans who weren’t familiar with The Clone Wars, and Embo could have the same effect.
Unlike Bane, who appeared in The Book of Boba Fett as the intimidating figure fans knew, Embo enters The Mandalorian & Grogu clearly burdened by past losses. He’s older and has been inactive, only returning to work when the New Republic offered funding – before that money disappeared. His once-feared companion is also long gone.
Embo’s limited appearances in The Clone Wars never hurt his appeal – in fact, they made him a more intriguing character. Now, the big question is whether this film will showcase his skills and prove he remains a formidable bounty hunter, even after being out of the game for a while.
