Gaston Leroux’s novel, The Phantom of the Opera, first appeared in 1909. It tells the story of a disfigured, obsessed man and his fascination with a young singer, Christine Daaé. In 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber transformed the novel into a spectacular stage musical, portraying the Phantom less as a frightening monster and more as a sympathetic, tragic figure. The original London production continues to run, and the Broadway show recently closed in April 2023 after an incredible 35 years.
The musical proved popular and was even adapted into a 2004 film starring Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler. Now, Art Threat reports that Andrew Lloyd Webber is revisiting the story with three new books inspired by The Phantom of the Opera, set to be released later this year to celebrate the musical’s 40th anniversary.
On September 1st, Erin A. Craig, the bestselling author of House of Salt and Sorrows, will release Our Strange Duet, a young adult novel that retells The Phantom of the Opera from Christine’s perspective. The story explores the complicated love triangle between Christine, the Phantom, and her friend Raoul. Craig, a longtime fan of the original story, described working on the project as a dream come true and a wonderful creative experience. An audiobook version, featuring a full cast and music from the show, will also be available from Penguin Random House Audio.
Golden Books is releasing a children’s version of Phantom of the Opera by Christy Webster on the same day. And on October 27th, a new coffee table book, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera: A Behind-the-Mask Look at the Global Phenomenon, will be available. This book offers a look back at the show’s history with sketches, photos, and interviews with people involved over the last forty years, including original Phantom Michael Crawford and actress Rachel Zegler, who performed with Webber in October 2025. An audiobook version will also be released by Penguin Random House Audio.
While The Phantom of the Opera isn’t as widely popular as it once was, it’s enjoyed an impressive 40-year run. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber previously attempted to recapture that success with a sequel, Love Never Dies, which premiered in London in 2010, but it wasn’t well-received and never made it to Broadway. Now, with these new books geared towards younger readers, it seems Webber and the publishers are hoping to build a new fanbase for the original Phantom.
You can now pre-order the new books! However, special hardcover copies of Our Strange Duet will only be sold at live performances and on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s website.
