Re-watching the original Scrubs makes it clear that the main character, JD, isn’t a very good person. Throughout the series, he consistently displays problematic behavior – sexism, prejudice against LGBTQ+ people, selfishness, racism, and fatphobia, to name a few. Despite this, the show often portrays him as someone we’re supposed to connect with and root for. Ultimately, JD comes across as mean-spirited, self-centered, and entitled.
Even considering how standards have changed over the past 25 years, JD’s behavior often felt inappropriate, even back then. Characters who weren’t straight white men often seemed to exist only to help JD deliver jokes – jokes that didn’t always land. Despite this, the show still portrays him as charming, when he often comes across as irritating.
Repeatedly Breaking Up With Elliot In The Worst Possible Ways
Okay, let me tell you, watching JD’s relationship with Elliot is just… frustrating. It’s not a sweet, complicated romance like the show wants you to believe. He doesn’t just make mistakes; he actively messes with Elliot’s heart, convincing her to leave good guys only to discard her himself. It’s not about being unsure of his feelings; it feels deliberately selfish, masked by a bit of vulnerability. Honestly, it comes across as a complete disregard for how his actions affect her. It’s less ‘complicated love’ and more ‘JD being inconsiderate,’ if you ask me.
Makes Jokes At Everyone Else’s Expense That Only He Finds Funny
JD often tries to be funny, but his jokes usually fall flat and make people uncomfortable – he’s often the only one who finds them amusing. He frequently makes fun of his friends’ weaknesses or how they look, without considering their feelings. What he thinks is playful banter often comes across as just plain mean, masked by a silly attitude. He seems to think being rude is okay as long as he’s smiling while doing it.
All Of The Gurning
You know, at first, JD’s physical comedy was really charming and clever. But honestly, it started to wear thin. It went from feeling fresh and inventive to just… constant. All those exaggerated faces, weird walks, and random noises started popping up even when they didn’t really make sense, like they were just trying to fill time. It shifted from being endearing to feeling like the writers – and the character – had lost their comedic spark. It just became distracting, and I found myself wishing they’d move on to something new.
JD Literally Can’t See Women Who Are Sexually Unavailable To Him
The Scrubs episode “My Urologist” features a surprisingly unsettling reveal: JD consistently fails to notice wedding rings on women. While presented as a joke, this moment reveals a lot about his character. It strongly suggests that JD only acknowledges women if he perceives them as being available for romantic or sexual attention, effectively reducing them to potential partners and highlighting his deeply ingrained sexism.
JD Tells Elliot That He Doesn’t Need Her Now He Has Slept With Her
One of JD’s most unattractive moments is when he coldly tells Elliot he no longer needs her, right after they’ve been intimate. It’s a shockingly direct statement that reveals a complete lack of emotional connection. He sees Elliot not as a partner or friend, but simply as someone who fulfilled a need, highlighting his disregard for her feelings – and for women overall.
JD Is Obsessed With His Best Friend’s Race
The friendship between JD and Turk is a core part of Scrubs, but it often relies on problematic behavior. JD frequently makes jokes or uses nicknames for Turk that reference his race. While the show presents these moments as playful, the constant repetition makes them feel less like friendly teasing and more like JD is singling Turk out because of his race. It suggests that JD sees every person of color as potential material for a joke.
JD Tells Kim He Doesn’t Love Her While She’s Giving Birth To His Baby
JD has always struggled with timing, but this is particularly bad. While Kim is in labor, giving birth to their child, he decides to tell her he doesn’t love her. It’s incredibly selfish – instead of being supportive during such a difficult and important moment, he focuses entirely on his own feelings.
JD Is A Complete Elitist
JD often portrays himself as an underdog, but he definitely has a tendency to act superior. He criticizes his brother, implies Elliot is naturally disorganized, and seems to think he’s better than Carla because of her profession. It’s ironic that someone trying to seem down-to-earth spends so much time judging others who aren’t as accomplished as him.
JD Yells At Carla After She Defends Him
It should have been a moment of thanks when Carla defended JD against Dr. Cox, but JD reacted badly. He got upset with her for calling him “Bambi,” completely missing that she was trying to help. Instead of being grateful for her support, he focused on the nickname and made the situation about his own feelings. This really shows what’s important to JD – how he looks to others, rather than who has his back.
JD Kisses His Best Friend’s Wife
Some boundaries shouldn’t be crossed, and kissing your best friend’s wife is a major one. JD does just that with Carla, soon after she marries Turk, and it’s a serious breach of trust. The show attempts to excuse it as a mistake or emotional turmoil, but it’s hard to overlook how easily JD jeopardizes his close friendship with Turk.
