Kurt Russell’s Pulse-Pounding Action Thriller ‘Breakdown’ Speeds Onto Steaming

Kurt Russell became a huge star in the 1980s with popular action movies like Escape from New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China. He continued to deliver beloved films throughout the 90s, including classics like Backdraft, Tombstone, and Stargate. But one of his 1997 movies is often forgotten, even though it’s a really suspenseful thriller. Luckily, it’s coming to streaming on April 1st for those who want to rediscover—or discover for the first time—this hidden gem.

Jonathan Mostow, the director of films like U-571 and Terminator 3, helms this action thriller. It stars Russell as Jeff Taylor, an ordinary man whose car trouble leaves him stranded. When a helpful truck driver offers Jeff’s wife, Amy (played by Kathleen Quinlan), a ride to town, Jeff surprisingly lets her go. This decision quickly proves to be a mistake, as Amy vanishes, and Jeff is left to uncover the truth behind her disappearance.

If you enjoy suspenseful thrillers like those by Alfred Hitchcock, or movies like Duel and The Vanishing, you should check out Breakdown. This 90s film doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, and features a standout performance from Kurt Russell. It’s coming to Paramount+ on April 1, so it’s a great time to discover it.

Kurt Russell Is a Desperate Hero in ‘Breakdown’

Kurt Russell’s popular roles often show him as a tough, humorous hero. However, in Breakdown, he plays a very different character. He’s an average man thrown into a dangerous situation, making it easy for viewers to relate to him—because what happens to him could realistically happen to anyone.

As the movie unfolds, we see Jeff’s desperate search for his wife repeatedly dismissed by both the townspeople and the police. When he finally confronts the truck driver – brilliantly and disturbingly played by J.T. Walsh – the man lies and tries to manipulate Jeff into believing he’s mistaken.

As Taylor continues his desperate search for his wife, he proves incredibly inventive and determined – something anyone would do for someone they love. Luckily, the ending of Breakdown offers a rewarding resolution to their ordeal, and it’s sure to spark discussion about how far people will go to help those they care about.

Kurt Russell Was Left Broken by ‘Breakdown’

Although Kurt Russell experiences some physical challenges in Breakdown, it’s not as relentlessly fast-paced as many of his other action roles where he’s constantly rushing to resolve a crisis. The director noted that, surprisingly, playing an ordinary person proved more difficult for Russell than his typical hero roles in films like Escape from New York or Big Trouble in Little China.

In a conversation with Metrograph, director Jonathan Mostow shared that Kurt Russell experienced genuine physical discomfort while filming Breakdown. Russell apparently told Mostow between takes that he was going home each night and telling Goldie Hawn he was in pain from making the movie. Mostow was surprised, as he’d worked on action films with much more physically challenging stunts.

He explained that after work, he’d come home with aches in his shoulders and neck and couldn’t figure out why. Then it hit him: it was because of the role he was playing. His character was constantly hunched over, and he was subconsciously mimicking that posture all day.

This proves that regular activity is incredibly beneficial for joint health. You can watch Breakdown on Paramount+, starting April 1st.
