James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studios, have announced when the fifth project in their new DC Universe will be released. This confirms Gunn is more than a year and four months into launching his new franchise, which began with ‘Creature Commandos’ in December 2024.
The first trailer for the upcoming HBO Max series Lanterns revealed it will premiere in August 2026. The trailer offered fans a first, extended look at Aaron Pierre as Jon Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, and hinted at the intense action and dramatic storylines to come with a TV-MA rating.

The DC Universe’s future will also include stories about the Green Lanterns, with Aaron Pierre already cast in the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow. Currently, there’s no word on whether Kyle Chandler will reprise his role as Hal Jordan in future DC projects.
This is the fifth official project to launch from DC Studios’ new DC Universe, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. It began with the animated series Creature Commandos in December 2024, followed by the film Superman in July 2025. The first episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 then premiered a month later, concluding its run on HBO Max in early October.
This year will see the release of three new DC films, beginning with Supergirl on June 26th. Lanterns will follow in August, and in October, DC Studios will release its first horror film, Clayface. Beyond these, several sequels, spin-offs, and expanded stories are either confirmed or being discussed for release in the coming years.
The story will expand with Creature Commandos, a new animated series confirmed to return for a second season on HBO Max. Although specific plot details haven’t been revealed, the Bride will be at the head of a team of villains and antiheroes. This team will include King Shark, known from The Suicide Squad, and a larger, updated version of G.I. Robot.

Okay, so I’m really excited to hear that the new Superman universe is already expanding! Following the first film in 2025, they’re already working on a sequel, currently titled Man of Tomorrow, which is slated for release in July 2027. The best part? David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult are all returning as Superman, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor, respectively. Apparently, they’ll have to join forces to take on Brainiac – and Lars Eidinger is going to play him! I’m already anticipating a fantastic villain performance.
The movie also hints at future series. One will focus on Skylar Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, potentially featuring the villain Gorilla Grodd. Another spin-off is planned for Edi Gathegi, who will return as Mr. Terrific.

The second season of Peacemaker, the third installment in this series, concluded in October 2025. What happens next for the character is currently unknown, but a third season or a spin-off focusing on his team at Checkmate are both possibilities.

This year, the popular series will continue with the release of Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock. There’s a possibility she’ll continue working with DC Studios in the future, perhaps in the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow or another Superman movie.

Currently, the Man of Tomorrow project is the DC Studios film furthest from being released. Several other movies and TV series are also being developed, with a new Wonder Woman movie among them.
How Lanterns Will Add to James Gunn’s DCU

Lanterns is quickly generating excitement for the new DC Universe. Its first trailer has already received more views than any previous trailer for a DC show on HBO Max. This will be the first live-action Green Lantern project since the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds, which unfortunately damaged the character’s reputation with audiences.
This show will be the first based on the Lantern universe to feature mature content, earning it a TV-MA rating. Actor Nathan Fillion has hinted at a lot of strong language in the series—more than in any of his previous work—and the trailer confirms a decidedly gritty and foul-mouthed tone right from the start.
After John Stewart’s prominent role in Man of Tomorrow, fans are optimistic that the Green Lantern Corps will continue to be a key element in future DC stories.
Although the actors’ plans beyond this show haven’t been officially announced, fans are increasingly excited about the possibility of seeing them in future projects within the same world.
