James Marsden has addressed rumors about Hugh Jackman potentially reprising his role as Wolverine and joining the X-Men team in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
After a brief appearance in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, James Marsden is returning to play Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops. He’s joined by other actors from the previous X-Men films, including Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, all appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. While Hugh Jackman recently reprised his role as Wolverine in the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s currently unconfirmed whether he will also be in Avengers: Doomsday.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, James Marsden discussed appearing in Avengers: Doomsday without having to interact with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. He explained that he enjoyed the playful rivalry between Cyclops and Wolverine, describing it as a “brotherly, healthy competition” where they often playfully annoyed each other. While he was happy to be back in the role, he admitted he missed Jackman and the dynamic they shared. He playfully dodged giving a more detailed answer, simply stating that he did, in fact, miss working with Jackman.
While this doesn’t officially confirm anything, it heavily suggests Wolverine won’t be in Avengers: Doomsday, even though many other X-Men characters will be. It’s not a definite no, though, as Marvel often keeps surprise cameos secret. Another possibility is that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will appear in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, so he could still play a role in the larger story despite not being in the first movie, which comes out December 18th.
Despite a large cast announcement and four trailers, the plot of Avengers: Doomsday remains largely a mystery. The inclusion of many X-Men characters from the pre-MCU films is odd, especially considering Wolverine isn’t included. As a key figure in the X-Men movies – particularly his connection with Cyclops – leaving Wolverine out will definitely change how the characters interact in the new film.
A popular theory about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday suggests Doctor Doom will target Nathan Summers, the son of Cyclops. This could explain why James Marsden’s character appears so upset in the movie’s X-Men preview. The theory also notes Doom’s existing interest in Franklin Richards, the child of Reed and Sue Storm, and points out that the trailers also focus on the children of Steve Rogers and Thor.
With fans still buzzing about upcoming Marvel movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, a new X-Men movie is officially happening. Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts , will be directing. It’s currently unknown how previous appearances of X-Men characters like Wolverine, Cyclops, and others – including those in Doomsday* – will impact this new film, which aims to present a fresh perspective on these beloved heroes.
The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will feature a huge team of heroes including the X-Men, Doctor Doom, the Fantastic Four, Captain America (Steve Rogers), and Thor. Joining them are Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the new Captain America (Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Falcon (Joaquin Torres, played by Danny Ramirez), the new Black Panther (Shuri, played by Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia), Gambit (Channing Tatum), and all of the members of the Thunderbolts/New Avengers.
