92% RT Rated Action Thriller Spin-off Led by “Lethal” New Hero Refuses to Back Down on Streaming

The John Wick universe is growing, and while Keanu Reeves’ films as Baba Yaga have consistently drawn large audiences over four movies, the first spin-off film didn’t perform as well in theaters. However, the new addition to the franchise has been a success on streaming platforms.

Ana de Armas, known for her roles in *No Time to Die* and *Knives Out*, will star in *Ballerina* (also known as *From the World of John Wick: Ballerina*). She plays a young, inexperienced killer seeking revenge for her father’s death. The film takes place between the events of *John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum* and *John Wick: Chapter 4*, and expands the universe of the *John Wick* franchise, offering a deeper look into the world of assassins.

I really enjoyed *Ballerina*, and critics seemed to agree, giving it a pretty good score. But honestly, the reaction from regular moviegoers like me was even stronger! It scored incredibly high on Popcornmeter. It’s a shame that didn’t translate into huge box office numbers – it made around $137 million worldwide with a $90 million budget. While the theatrical run wasn’t a massive success, *Ballerina* has become a huge hit on streaming! It quickly jumped to the top spot and stayed there for weeks, which is fantastic to see.

Is ‘Ballerina 2’ Going to Happen?

Lionsgate

Len Wiseman, the director known for action movies like the *Underworld* series, *Total Recall*, and *Die Hard 4*, helms *From the World of John Wick: Ballerina*. He co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten and Emerald Fennell. The film features a cameo by Keanu Reeves as John Wick, and brings back Ian McShane and Anjelica Huston in their familiar roles. Sadly, *Ballerina* also marks the final appearance of Lance Reddick, who returns as Charon. The cast also includes Gabriel Byrne (*The Usual Suspects, Hereditary*), Norman Reedus (*The Walking Dead*), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (*Dune*), and Catalina Sandino Moreno (*From, Maria Full of Grace*). Here’s a look at the official summary of the plot…

Ballerina is set during the same time as the movie John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. The film centers on Eve Macarro (played by Ana de Armas) as she starts her training to become an assassin within the Ruska Roma community.

The recent movie *Ballerina* didn’t perform well in theaters, but its performance on streaming services will now be considered when deciding whether to make a sequel. Interestingly, the first film hints at a continuation, and director Len Wiseman has shared some potential plot points. He’s indicated the story would explore Ana de Armas’ character discovering her past is a fabrication, and finally understanding her father’s actions and her true origins. She’s come to a realization: ‘I made a choice. I have the answers I needed, but this world has consequences.’

The film *Ballerina*, part of the *John Wick* universe, is just the beginning of a growing number of spin-offs. More are planned, including an anime series, a show called *Under The High Table*, and a movie focusing on Donnie Yen’s popular character, Caine. Plus, a fifth *John Wick* movie is now in development as well.
