9 Years Later, An Award-Winning Psychological Thriller Series Is Returning For A Third & Final Season

A nine-year-old, award-winning thriller is about to return for one last ride.

The popular BBC psychological thriller Doctor Foster will return for a third and final season. The show centers around Dr. Gemma Foster, a family doctor who suspects her husband, Simon, is being unfaithful. The series is a contemporary take on the classic Greek myth of Medea.

Good news for fans of Doctor Foster: a third season is officially happening! According to Deadline, the new season will arrive nine years after the second one aired. Suranne Jones, Bertie Carvel, and Tom Taylor are all returning as Gemma, Simon, and Tom, respectively. Mike Bartlett, who created the series, is also writing the new episodes. Filming is set to begin in the UK this spring.

The third season of Doctor Foster will be set ten years after the dramatic events of season two, which concluded with Tom’s disappearance. Now, Gemma is getting ready to marry again, but this stirs up memories from her past. Suranne Jones also shared some insights into the new season’s storyline and script.

I immediately felt ready to reprise my role as Gemma Foster when I was asked. We’d intentionally created distance after the first two seasons, and it felt like the right moment for Tom, Gemma and Simon’s son, to return as an adult, seeking answers. This time, the story really focuses on taking responsibility for past actions and exploring whether we can ever fully escape the impact of trauma to truly move on with our lives.

The TV series Doctor Foster received critical acclaim and numerous awards during its first two seasons. Actress Suranne Jones was particularly celebrated for her portrayal of Gemma, winning a BAFTA for Best Actress in 2016. The show was also hugely popular with UK audiences, with over 10 million people tuning in to watch the final episode live.

The BBC often brings back popular shows after they’ve finished. They recently announced that Line of Duty will return for a seventh season in 2027, following its sixth season which ended in 2021. Similarly, the creator of Doctor Foster has said the show could return if there was more of the story to tell.

As a big fan of the show, it’s neat to remember that it hasn’t been that long since we saw these characters on screen. I recently recalled Victoria Hamilton, who played Anna Baker in Doctor Foster, popping up in the 2020 drama Life – it was a short-lived series, just one season. But thankfully, this new season is bringing the focus right back to Gemma’s story, which is what I’ve been waiting for!

It’s currently unknown if any other characters will return for season 3 of Doctor Foster, but the return of the main family members suggests we’ll see all the key players. This also opens the door for a conclusive ending to the series, potentially offering either a happy or heartbreaking resolution.
