If you enjoy the spy thriller Slow Horses, you’ll want to check out a new series now streaming on Peacock. Spy thrillers have become increasingly popular on streaming services in recent years, with shows like The Agency, The Night Agent, Black Doves, and Citadel gaining attention. But Slow Horses, with its five seasons, really paved the way for this trend.
As a huge spy thriller fan, I’ve been loving how consistently good and reliably released the Gary Oldman series Slow Horses has been. It’s got a fantastic cast, and I always know I’m in for a treat each season. But now, it’s great to see another really well-made spy series gaining traction as a streaming hit – more good stuff for us fans!
According to FlixPatrol, the new spy series Ponies is currently the second most popular show on Peacock in the U.S. All eight episodes were released on January 15th. The top five also includes Vanderpump Rules, Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire, and The Traitors, which is currently number one. However, Ponies might take the top spot as it heads into its first weekend.
The series Ponies is both a popular streaming success and a critical favorite. As of today, it has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 20 critic reviews, earning it the “Certified Fresh” designation. While critics love the show, the audience score is currently at 70% and is changing as more people discover it on Peacock.
Ponies stars Emilia Clarke, known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, and Haley Lu Richardson from The White Lotus. Clarke plays Bea and Richardson plays Twila, two American embassy secretaries working in Moscow during the Cold War. The series, set in 1977, centers on Bea and Twila as they begin working as secret assets for the CIA.
The TV series Ponies gets its name from an old, somewhat insulting term meaning ‘unimportant people.’ This perfectly describes how the two main characters, who are secretaries, are able to secretly carry out CIA missions, even right in the heart of Moscow. The story begins when Bea and Twila’s husbands are unexpectedly killed. Ponies was created by Susanna Fogel, known for Booksmart, and David Iserson, who worked on Mr. Robot.
Dani Kessel Odom of ScreenRant gave Peacock’s new spy series, Ponies, a very positive review, awarding it 9 out of 10 stars. She highlighted the show’s unpredictable plot, noting it’s “full of twists and turns.” Odom also commended the show’s direction and the strong connection between the lead actors. While a second season of Ponies hasn’t been officially announced, its immediate popularity suggests a promising future for the series.
