8. The Last Man On Earth

Will Forte created and stars in The Last Man On Earth, a funny show set after a devastating virus wipes out most of the world. The show centers on Phil Miller, who initially thinks he’s the only person left. He eventually meets other survivors, like Carol Pilbasian (Kristen Schaal), and learns that his own personality is often a bigger challenge than simply surviving the apocalypse.

I always thought The Last Man On Earth was one of the funniest shows dealing with a post-apocalyptic world – it really struck a great balance between being genuinely unsettling and being laugh-out-loud funny, thanks to Will Forte’s amazing comedic timing. It ran for four seasons, and even though the ending left us hanging, I still think it’s one of the best portrayals of a world after the apocalypse that I’ve ever seen.

7. 12 Monkeys

The TV series 12 Monkeys, which aired on Syfy from 2015 to 2018, is based on the 1995 film. It stars Aaron Stanford as James Cole, a time traveler on a mission to prevent a deadly plague from wiping out humanity. He’s aided by Dr. Cassandra Railly, played by Amanda Schull, who he recruits from the present day.

Though the show 12 Monkeys starts with a compelling idea – trying to avoid a terrible future by changing the present – this approach naturally has some drawbacks. Despite initial resistance from some involved, 12 Monkeys ultimately became one of the most captivating and thrilling sci-fi series in recent years, consistently improving with each season.

6. Sweet Tooth

Sweet Tooth is a Netflix series, running from 2021 to 2024, based on the comic book by Jeff Lemire. It’s set after a devastating global pandemic called The Great Crumble, which was caused by a disease known as the Sick. This pandemic led to the birth of many children who are part human, part animal – like Gus (Christian Convery), who is a boy with deer-like features.

Sweet Tooth centers around Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), a former monster hunter, who guides Gus on a journey to find his mother in Colorado. Alongside this main story, the show explores the lives of other characters in a world forever changed, focusing on their struggles and humanity in a post-apocalyptic setting. Over its three seasons, Sweet Tooth created a detailed and compelling world, delivering exactly what viewers needed.

5. The Man In The High Castle

Inspired by Philip K. Dick’s novel, The Man in the High Castle presents a world where the Axis powers won World War II and split the United States between them. Set in the 1960s, the show depicts a dramatically altered American life, blending political intrigue with captivating science fiction elements.

The sci-fi aspects of The Man in the High Castle, which portrays an America controlled by a fascist regime, unfold slowly. They mainly appear through enigmatic film reels showing a different reality – one where the Allies won World War II. These elements are compelling for both fans of the show and those who enjoy dystopian stories, as they force the characters (and the audience) to question everything they think they know about their world.

4. Dr. Stone

The anime Dr. Stone, based on the manga of the same name, is finishing up next month after a consistently excellent run. The story centers around two best friends who wake up after 3,000 years to find everyone has been turned to stone, and they discover a way to reverse it.

Dr. Stone uses surprisingly accurate science to explore a world where people have been turned to stone and must rebuild society, even battling another group of survivors along the way. The anime’s last episodes are scheduled to air in April 2026, promising an exciting end to this almost flawless dystopian story.

3. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

As a huge fan of the Cyberpunk universe, I was completely hooked by Edgerunners. It’s set in the same Night City we explored in Cyberpunk 2077, and the story really grabbed me. It follows David Martinez, a young guy who loses everything in a violent attack and is trying to find his place. He’s bright, but ends up taking a dangerous path, becoming an edgerunner – basically a mercenary operating in the city’s dark, high-tech underbelly.

Set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an anime series that expands on the game’s universe. Taking place in 2076, it portrays a starkly divided and troubled future, and has become very popular with fans. Another season is currently in development.

2. Arcane

Created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, the animated series Arcane is set in the world of League of Legends and premiered on Netflix in 2021. The show, based on the popular video game, has received acclaim for its detailed world and imaginative storytelling.
