Amazon Prime Video remains a leader in science fiction television. The series, which debuted in 2024, quickly gained a following for its depiction of compelling characters navigating a devastated, post-apocalyptic America. Now with a highly-rated second season, it’s a great starting point for anyone looking for exciting sci-fi content, and there are many other excellent films to enjoy afterward.
Post-apocalyptic films, often called “wastelands” movies, let audiences experience a dangerous and intriguing world alongside those who have lived through a major disaster. Whether it’s the fallout from nuclear war or a world destroyed by aliens, these stories and settings consistently captivate viewers.
Resident Evil: Extinction is Fallout For Zombie Fans
Following the worldwide outbreak of the zombie virus after the destruction of Raccoon City, the third film in Paul W.S. Anderson’s Extinction shows Alice mastering her abilities as she journeys through a desolate landscape. Meanwhile, Claire Redfield guides a group of survivors across Nevada. Their travels are interrupted when Alexander Isaacs and the Umbrella Corporation locate Alice and attempt to eliminate her by unleashing hordes of zombies.
If you enjoy the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout, you’ll likely appreciate Resident Evil: Extinction. This film, which feels like a blend of Mad Max and a zombie outbreak, shares many similarities with the Prime Video series – think hidden bunkers run by eccentric scientists, heroes battling creatures in a desolate landscape, and characters with unusual abilities.
The Book of Eli is a Surprisingly Touching Thriller
As a movie fan, I always found The Book of Eli really compelling. It’s set in a totally devastated America after a nuclear war, and it follows this lone wanderer, Eli, as he travels west. He’s carrying what seems to be the very last copy of the Bible, and things get complicated when he walks into this small town ruled by a seriously tough guy. This leader quickly realizes Eli is a skilled fighter, but more importantly, he finds out about the Bible and decides he wants it – figuring he can use it to control what’s left of everyone around him. It’s a pretty intense chase from there!
The film The Book of Eli stands out for its religious themes, which are presented subtly and originally—it avoids being overly moralistic or cliché. Eli’s quest feels like a modern-day parable, demonstrating the power of faith in a broken world. The story is moving for everyone, no matter their beliefs, and it influenced the action genre, paving the way for shows like the Fallout TV series. In fact, the film’s atmosphere often feels like it could fit right into the Fallout universe.
Oblivion is Tom Cruise’s Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movie
In the future, after an alien invasion has made Earth nearly unlivable, humans have left the planet. The film Oblivion follows Jack Harper and Victoria Olsen, who work on Earth extracting fuel from seawater, overseen by a space station called The Tet. When a mission to the surface goes wrong, Jack begins to doubt everything he’s been told, especially after discovering he has a clone.
With a nostalgic nod to 1970s sci-fi, Oblivion cleverly reimagines the alien invasion story and features a surprisingly underrated performance from Tom Cruise. It’s a love story set against a backdrop of global catastrophe, blending science fiction and romance in a way similar to Fallout, and creating a similarly bleak and immersive world. Though parts of the story might seem familiar, the film delivers satisfying moments that make it worth seeing.
Edge of Tomorrow Perfected Time Loop Science Fiction
In Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise plays Major Bill Cage, fighting in a global war against alien invaders called “Mimics.” After showing cowardice, Cage is demoted and forced to join a desperate, large-scale invasion of France – humanity’s final attempt to fight back. When he kills one of the alien leaders, he gains the ability to relive the same day over and over, allowing him to learn from his mistakes and gain an edge in the chaotic battle.
With its impressive mechanical suits, large-scale battles, and depiction of a Europe devastated by aliens, Edge of Tomorrow revitalized science fiction and clearly draws inspiration from the Fallout video game series. Adapted from the Japanese novel All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi Abe, the film was a major success that helped reignite Tom Cruise’s career. Watching Cruise and Emily Blunt fight in their armored suits immediately brings to mind the power armor-clad knights seen in Fallout.
War For the Planet of the Apes Forces Audiences to Side With the Apes
The Planet of the Apes franchise saw a major resurgence after Rupert Wyatt’s 2011 film, reaching a peak with Matt Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes. The story takes place years into Caesar’s leadership, and trouble begins when humans target him for assassination, tragically killing his son instead. Driven by a desire for revenge, Caesar leads his apes on a quest for safety away from humans, all while he and a small group pursue the officer responsible for the attack.
Unlike previous films in the series, War for the Planet of the Apes clearly positions the audience to sympathize with the apes, particularly as Caesar seeks revenge on The Colonel. The story borrows from films like Apocalypse Now and True Grit, feeling similar to a Fallout quest, but with Caesar, an ape, taking the lead instead of a human or mutant.
I Am Legend Gave Will Smith His Most Intense Role
Five years after a deadly virus turns people into vampire-like creatures, I Am Legend follows Robert Neville, a US Army virologist who appears to be the last human left in New York City – and possibly the entire world. He dedicates his time to studying these creatures, hoping to find a cure. But when he captures a new specimen, he provokes a dangerous and frightening conflict with the monsters like never before.
I Am Legend is less about monsters and more about the emotional effects of being completely alone after a disaster, showing how isolation impacts the main character, Neville. Although the movie doesn’t capture everything from Richard Matheson’s book, it’s a thrilling survival horror film that fans of Fallout will likely enjoy. And with recent events, it feels particularly relevant to watch now.
The Road is a Brutal Look at Life in the Wastelands
Years after a disaster makes most of the world unlivable, Cormac McCarthy’s The Road follows a father and son as they travel south in search of a safer place. They hope warmer weather and a way to cross water will lead them to a better life. Their journey is fraught with danger, as they must fight off violent criminals and endure harsh conditions. Throughout it all, the father wrestles with the heartbreaking possibility of ending his son’s life to protect him from an even worse fate.
Unlike most post-apocalyptic stories, The Road isn’t filled with action or adventure. It’s a relentlessly bleak and anxious look at simply trying to survive, and it leaves viewers feeling deeply hopeless. Fans of Fallout might find it interesting to see a more realistic take on the genre, and it could make them appreciate the fun and escapism of the Fallout series even more.
Mad Max: Fury Road Perfected the Post-Apocalypse Genre
Years after the first Mad Max movie, Fury Road finds Max Rockatansky captured by the army of Immortan Joe, a ruthless warlord. When Furiosa, one of Joe’s top fighters, decides to help his wives escape to a better life, Joe sends his entire force to stop them. Max sees this as a chance to escape himself and teams up with the women, helping them search for a legendary safe haven known as the ‘green place’.
Most modern action movies fall short of being true classics, but Mad Max: Fury Road is widely considered a masterpiece. It’s essentially one long, thrilling chase, with a plot that never slows down and reminds everyone just how great Max’s story can be. Relying on incredible practical effects instead of CGI, Mad Max: Fury Road is the ultimate post-apocalyptic adventure, even surpassing the Fallout series in delivering a truly immersive experience.
