Fans have often criticized Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto for how he depicted the female characters in the series. While making Tsunade the Fifth Hokage was a positive change, some aspects of her character still feel problematic. Though she’s shown as incredibly strong, the show often relies on portraying her as harsh, and there’s actually a lot more depth to her personality than just being overbearing.
Sakura Haruno is still largely remembered for her intense, and often unhealthy, focus on Sasuke Uchiha. Hinata was initially portrayed as shy and passive, but she gained more confidence and strength as Naruto Shippuden progressed. It’s often overlooked that, despite these well-known traits, the female ninja in Naruto are complex and multifaceted.
“You make mistakes, but because of those mistakes, you get the strength to stand up to them. That’s why I think you are truly strong!”
In the original Naruto series, Hinata Hyuga was often overlooked and seemed shy. Before their battle, her cousin Neji harshly told her to quit being a ninja and even give up on life, publicly belittling her. Despite being scared, Hinata found the courage to face him anyway, even though she believed he was the stronger fighter.
During their fight, Neji deliberately tried to embarrass her, but she bravely spoke up about her ninja beliefs, inspired by Naruto Uzumaki, whom she greatly admired. Later, during the Fourth Ninja World War, her understanding of Naruto, gained from closely observing him, proved valuable.
Naruto wasn’t always the strong ninja his fans admire. He stumbled and made errors, but his determination to keep going despite setbacks was a key to his success. This inspired her deeply, and she pushed herself relentlessly in training with Neji, determined to overcome both her own weaknesses and what others expected of her.
“It’s not a matter of can or can’t. I’m doing it.”
Ino Yamanaka is a surprisingly complex character in Naruto, often underestimated by fans. While she sometimes appears superficial and relies on her quick wit, Ino is actually a determined and capable kunoichi who actively pursues her goals and provides a crucial balance within Team 10. There’s a lot more depth to her than most viewers realize.
One of the first things you notice about Ino is her long-standing rivalry with Sakura Haruno. They were originally friends, but their relationship turned competitive when they both developed feelings for the same person. Looking back, Sakura actually owes a lot to Ino, who constantly challenged her to improve. Ino always believed in Sakura’s abilities, even when Sakura doubted herself.
Ino plays a key role in Team 10, using her strong will and intelligence to keep everyone on track. She’s incredibly determined and never gives up, and this quote is just one example of her unwavering commitment to winning.
“It’s not because they’re girls you know, Neji. It’s just that those two are using kid gloves. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman in battle.”
Similar to Ino, TenTen doesn’t get enough opportunities to stand out in Naruto and Shippuden. Though the series often highlights Rock Lee, TenTen is clearly the emotional center of Might Guy’s team. She strongly believed that gender didn’t matter in a fight – skill was all that truly counted.
She was one of the few people brave enough to challenge Neji’s arrogance, even though he often reacted badly. TenTen also consistently encouraged Lee when he doubted himself and worried his limitations would prevent him from becoming a skilled ninja.
Initially, TenTen aimed to follow in the footsteps of her idol, the Fifth Hokage Tsunade. However, she discovered she didn’t possess the required chakra to become a skilled medical ninja. Despite this, she focused on her own talents, which proved invaluable throughout the series, notably during the Fourth Shinobi World War.
“Their wishes… Morever, Tsunade, your wishes… and dreams. Did you forget them?!”
After losing her brother, Nawaki, and then her beloved, Don Kato, Lady Tsunade was devastated. Grief led her to abandon her life in the Hidden Leaf Village and her career as a medical ninja. She coped with the pain by turning to drinking and gambling, trying to escape her feelings.
After Don Kato passed away, his niece Shizune, who was learning from Tsunade, became responsible for caring for Kato’s partner. Despite her best efforts, Shizune often struggled to reason with Tsunade. The possibility of using a special technique perfected by Kato to revive those she’d lost was incredibly appealing, especially since all that was required was to heal the arms damaged by the Third Hokage’s final act.
Tsunade wasn’t ready to make such a big decision. She was still deeply saddened by Nawaki’s death, and meeting Naruto only intensified her pain. Naruto’s resemblance to her brother almost led her to accept Orochimaru’s offer. While Shizune’s words didn’t immediately change Tsunade’s mind, they eventually stirred forgotten hopes and dreams within her, reminding her of her true self and helping her to move forward.
“I promise to protect you with my life!”
Both Naruto and Shippuden are notorious for having a lot of filler episodes, just like Bleach and other popular Shonen anime. Many of these filler episodes don’t connect to the main story and often feel pointless, especially when they interrupt exciting moments or cliffhangers. However, one particular…
The arc featuring the Three-Tails introduced Guren, a survivor of Orochimaru’s destruction. Although Orochimaru had destroyed her village, Guren was drawn to his immense power and chose to follow him. Later, Orochimaru tested her loyalty and abilities by ordering her to destroy a village. She completed the task, but the strength of her attack knocked her unconscious. After being healed by a compassionate woman, Guren returned to Orochimaru, who then demanded she kill the very person who had saved her.
Guren had no choice but to obey orders, which led her to kill a woman who left behind a young son named Yukimaru. Yukimaru possessed a powerful ability: control over the Three-Tails. Throughout this storyline, Guren deliberately misleads Yukimaru, fully aware of his fate. However, she unexpectedly begins to care for him. His innocence and unwavering loyalty profoundly affect Guren, and her ultimate sacrifice to protect him is one of the most moving moments in the series.
“Grow up… Death comes with being a shinobi… There are times when death is hard to accept, but if you don’t get over it, there’s no future.”
The series Naruto Shippuden takes a dark turn when Asuma Sarutobi is killed by Hidan, leaving his team, Team 10, unable to help. Overcome with sadness and rage, the three members of Team 10 decide to hunt down Hidan and Kakuzu on their own.
Just as Team 10 was about to head out, Tsunade stopped them. She reminded them they needed her approval before going anywhere, which Shikamaru found frustrating. He explained they weren’t being reckless, but simply didn’t want to live aimlessly.
Tsunade’s words might seem cruel, but she’s speaking the truth about life as a ninja. They’ve always known death is a possibility, and some won’t live as long as others. Asuma wouldn’t want them to recklessly chase death by facing enemies they can’t defeat. As the future leaders of the Hidden Leaf Village, they need to be wise and make smart choices to ensure the village has a future.
“Every one of us must do what’s in their power! If we’re going to die anyway… …then it’s better to die fighting than to do nothing!”
Throughout the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto consistently motivated and uplifted all the Allied Shinobi. When hope began to fade, Naruto’s strength and leadership were essential – without him, it seemed impossible to survive, let alone win such a difficult and relentless battle.
Sakura trained for years with Lady Tsunade, developing into a skilled ninja. While she initially struggled to keep pace with Naruto and Sasuke on Team 7, she truly blossomed during the Shippuden era when she focused on and mastered her abilities as a medical ninja.
Even though things look bad right now, it’s not time to quit. Even if defeat is inevitable, wouldn’t it be better to fight with everything you have, giving those who remain a chance? Sakura used to resist acknowledging anything Naruto had taught her, but now she understands exactly what kind of person he is. She deeply admires his unwavering determination and uses it to inspire others – that’s just how he fights!
