Generally, when a main cast list is unveiled for a film, I find myself having more clarity than questions. Yet, the announcement of the cast for the upcoming Street Fighter reboot leaves me with more questions than answers, leaving me curious about what’s in store for this movie.
However, let me clarify that this isn’t a criticism! Just as I mentioned earlier, when our knowledge was limited about the cast, I have a strong feeling that they will nail it this time. It seems like an abundance of dedication and passion has gone into creating this latest film.
That said, back to those questions, because I have seven of them! Hadouken!
Okay, So Who Is The Main Character For This Movie?
One might say that anyone familiar with the Street Fighter video games would readily acknowledge that Ryu is a central figure in the game. Indeed, one could argue that he, along with Chun-Li to some extent, serves as the symbol not just of the Street Fighter series, but also of Capcom as a whole!
Despite the presence of a logline that highlights Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li, it’s uncertain if he will be the lead in the upcoming movie, given the 1994 Street Fighter film, which some find enjoyable but I consider not superior to the 1993 Double Dragon. The latter movie, unfortunately, cast Guile as the main character instead.
As a huge fan, I’ve got to say, the new casting for ‘Cobra Kai’ has me really excited! Andrew Koji as Ryu is phenomenal, but I can’t help but wonder if he’s as well-known as Cody Rhodes, who will be portraying Guile. Although this movie might not rely on star power quite like the 1994 version, it still has me questioning who the main character will be. Is it Ryu? Could it possibly be Chun-Li? Or maybe even Guile? Honestly, I’m left guessing!

Also, Who Is The Main Villain?
It’s true that Ryu is undoubtedly the central character in Street Fighter, but it can be somewhat confusing to determine who the primary antagonist of the series is since this seems to vary depending on the game title. While M. Bison is indeed a recurring figure, it’s important to note that he was only the main villain in Street Fighter II, V, and the Alpha series.
In regards to Akuma, he serves as a primary antagonist for both Ryu and Ken. If we understand who the main character is in this film, it would provide a clearer image of who the main adversary is.
Among the cast members, David Dastmalchian stands out, gaining recognition since his roles in “The Suicide Squad” and “Late Night With the Devil.” However, Roman Reigns draws large crowds, having been one of the first to join the film’s cast (alongside Andrew Koji as Ryu). Yet, does this imply anything significant? It’s hard to say! Nonetheless, it makes me ponder.

Will Dhalsim Be All Stretchy-like?
One thing that took me by surprise from the cast list is discovering that Dhalsim is part of this film, as I honestly didn’t expect him to be there. This is due to the fact that out of all the supernatural elements present in Street Fighter (and there are many!), Dhalsim might possess the most extraordinary abilities.
In simpler terms, is it expected that his character will exhibit the ability to extend or lengthen himself similarly to Mr. Fantastic, in the upcoming movie?
As a film critic, I must admit, my curiosity has been piqued by the casting choice for Dhalsim in the upcoming movie. Vidyut Jammwal, famously recognized from the Commando series, is remarkably muscular – quite a departure from the lanky, yoga-master portrayal we’re accustomed to. I can’t help but wonder how this new take on Dhalsil will materialize. Will he maintain his traditional elasticity, or will there be a surprising twist? The questions swirl in my mind as I eagerly await the film’s release.

Will There Be Any Projectiles Thrown, For That Matter?
Let me add one more point! The series Street Fighter is renowned for its characters exchanging projectiles. Therefore, regarding the character Dhalsim, can he actually launch fireballs towards other characters? If yes, it’s crucial that there be some intense “Yoga fire! Yoga fire! Yoga flame!” scenes in this movie (just a heads up, I tend to play as Dhalsim in the game).
One reason some people adore certain Mortal Kombat films, particularly the latest one, is their lack of hesitation in embracing their over-the-top elements like explosive attacks and transformations. In contrast, live-action Street Fighter movies have been more reserved (with The Legend of Chun-Li being notably awkward).
My subsequent query is about whether this film will heavily feature the explosive fireballs and unique powers from the games, or if it will steer clear of such elements. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see.

Will This Be Street Fighter 2 Or Street Fighter 4 Era?
It’s been made known that the upcoming film takes place during the early ’90s. This is the genuine logline we have from Legendary.
In 1993, former Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo), who have fallen out, are once again drawn into fighting when the enigmatic Chun-Li (Callina Liang) summons them for a new World Warrior Tournament. This tournament promises intense battles, destiny, and rage. However, beneath this fierce competition lies a dangerous plot that compels them to confront each other as well as the ghosts of their past. If they don’t rise to the challenge, it could lead to their defeat – a game-ending disaster!
As for the timeline, Street Fighter II and Street Fighter IV are quite close. In fact, a character named Don Sauvage, portrayed by Eric Andre, debuted in Street Fighter V – I’ll elaborate on him later. Therefore, it’s challenging to determine which video game this film is drawing from more as it appears to be influenced by both, though it could potentially lean towards Street Fighter II. However, more information is needed for certainty.

Where The Hell Is Sagat?
I’m going to level with you. The thing about this cast that really takes me aback is actually an absence – and I’m talking about Sagat, the seven-foot-five behemoth! It’s like he’s vanished into thin air. Can’t help but wonder where he’s been kept hidden.
Upon learning that 50 Cent would portray Balrog, and there would also be Vega and M. Bison in the film, I thought to myself, “Surely Sagat will follow suit.” To my surprise, however, it appears as though they’ve included all of the significant characters from Street Fighter II: Championship Edition in this movie – just not Sagat.
Why isn’t Sagat included in this list? Given his significant roles in Ryu and Dan Hibiki’s backstories and his status as a prominent figure within the series, it appears his exclusion might be deliberate. Frankly, I can’t help but feel frustrated about this aspect of the cast. After all, Sagat is awesome!

Lastly, Why Are Don Sauvage And Joe Here?
As a die-hard film fan, I must admit, I’m scratching my head seeing Don Sauvage on set. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled to see new faces, but with Sagat being a Street Fighter legend and Don Sauvage only appearing in Zangief’s story in Street Fighter V (and possibly the man in the back of Balrog’s stage in SF II), it’s a bit surprising to see him here instead. I can’t help but wonder about the storyline!
What about Joe, the somewhat bland character from the original Street Fighter game? It’s puzzling why he and Don are included in this movie, given their lack of significance in Street Fighter history. I suppose we’ll have to find out when it comes out.
I’m curious to know what your initial reactions are, now that the main characters have been unveiled? I’d be delighted to hear your thoughts on this!
