6 Unappreciated TV Show Plot Twists That Deserve More Love

Warning: This article mentions the topics of mental health, miscarriage, and death.

TV shows are full of plot twists, but some of the best ones don’t get the attention they deserve. Great twists are usually hinted at throughout the show, but still manage to surprise you. While many famous twists from the last few decades are well-regarded for this reason, that’s not always true for every surprising moment.

As a TV fan, there’s nothing worse than a plot twist that comes completely out of left field – you know, when there’s no build-up at all! It can be so frustrating when it feels forced or unnatural. But honestly, even a surprise twist can work if the show does it well. There are some twists that are just… delightfully weird and silly, and while they might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I think they deserve more love! They’re endearing in their own way, even if they don’t make a ton of sense.

John’s Affair With Eurus

‘Sherlock’

BBC

As a big fan of Sherlock, I’ve always felt the reveal of Eurus gets a lot of attention, but there’s a smaller twist within it that people often overlook: her connection to John Watson. The fact that John was having an affair is a massive surprise, and honestly, it felt a bit out of character for him. What’s even more interesting is that we find out about it before Mary’s death, which initially left me wondering why the showrunners even decided to include that storyline in the first place.

Looking back, it all makes sense now. I figured Eurus would be the one in therapy with John, but I definitely didn’t see that twist coming – the fact she’d already crossed paths with the army doctor! It really shows how much she’s been pulling the strings behind the scenes, even in earlier seasons, especially with everything involving Moriarty. It’s a bit of a weird turn for the show, honestly, but I have to admit, it’s a really smart one.

Owen Coming Back From the Dead

‘Torchwood’

BBC

The world of Doctor Who is full of surprising plot twists, like the reveal of the Timeless Child and the Doctor’s ability to split into two versions. However, one of the most overlooked twists happens in Torchwood. When Owen Harper is shot, Jack uses the resurrection gauntlet – a device introduced in the very first episode – to bring him back to life. What’s shocking is that Owen doesn’t just return briefly; the gauntlet permanently revives him.

Owen isn’t truly alive in the Doctor Who spin-off, but he’s fully aware and able to move and speak. He doesn’t have a heartbeat or brain activity, and surprisingly, doesn’t need to eat or drink – a point he dramatically proves by standing on his head and seemingly vomiting up alcohol. Despite everything else happening with Susie and the gauntlet, this moment is particularly shocking.

4
Kim’s Baby Lie

‘Scrubs’

NBC

A particularly frustrating storyline in Scrubs involves J.D.’s experience with Kim’s pregnancy. It’s surprising to learn she never actually had a miscarriage and is still expecting a baby in Season 6. It’s also annoying that J.D. tries to quickly resolve the situation to avoid conflict and create a stable home for their child. Despite how frustrating this plotline is, Scrubs handles it in a surprisingly smart way.

Kim informs J.D. that she’s had a miscarriage after relocating to Washington for work, but she’s absent from the show for a significant 16 episodes. This long absence leads many viewers to forget about the storyline and Kim’s character. As a result, when Kim unexpectedly reappears at a seminar visibly pregnant, it’s a surprise to both J.D. and the audience, as they haven’t seen any development of a potential fatherhood storyline. Hopefully, the upcoming Scrubs reboot will deliver more surprising moments like this one.

3
Rebecca’s Secret “Bantr” Man

‘Ted Lasso’

Apple TV

Although Ted Lasso isn’t usually full of surprises, one reveal from Season 2 really stands out. Throughout the season, Rebecca is secretly talking to someone on the Bantr dating app and starts to develop feelings for him. After some back-and-forth, she agrees to meet him in person, only to be shocked to find out it’s one of her own players, Sam Obisanya.

Sam and Rebecca are a great match, though it takes time for them – and viewers – to realize it. Their relationship offers a refreshing portrayal of age-gap dynamics, avoiding common negative tropes and concluding without significant conflict or sadness. Although it’s unlikely Sam and Rebecca will rekindle their romance in Ted Lasso Season 4, especially with Rebecca’s reunion with someone else in the finale, it’s possible the show might acknowledge their connection in future episodes.

2
The Identity of the Mastermind

‘Mr. Robot’

USA Network

Even though Mr. Robot finished airing six years ago, it’s fantastic that new viewers are finding and enjoying this intense show. The reveal of who Mastermind really is is a major twist, but it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves among other TV plot twists. The series finale, “Hello, Elliot,” features one of Rami Malek’s strongest performances, bringing Elliot’s complex struggle with mental health to a dramatic conclusion.

In 2016, Rami Malek received a Primetime Emmy Award for his leading role as Elliot Alderson in the first episode of the TV series Mr. Robot, titled “eps1.0_hellofriend.mov.”

It turns out the mysterious Mastermind has been Elliot all along – a separate personality he developed as a way to deal with his life. While Elliot has created other personas before, this reveal is surprisingly effective because the show cleverly uses a twist we’ve seen before, but delivers it brilliantly.

1
Monica’s Death

‘Las Vegas’

NBC

Monica’s death in Las Vegas is a surprising turn of events, and how she dies is equally unexpected. Introduced in Season 3, Monica quickly makes an impression, but her time is cut short in a bizarre accident. At the end of the episode “Mothwoman,” while on the roof with Danny, a powerful gust of wind catches her loose blouse, lifting her off the roof and sending her tumbling down onto the Las Vegas Strip.

This scene tries for seriousness, but it’s unintentionally funny. The bad special effects and exaggerated acting make Monica being thrown through a shoe shop window comical. While the plot twist isn’t particularly thrilling, and the way it’s done undermines any real drama, it’s a surprisingly memorable moment that doesn’t get enough attention from viewers.
