Ubbe Is A Grounded Warrior
As a critic, I’ve always been fascinated by the character of Ubbe. He’s constantly navigating a tough situation – living in the shadow of his legendary father, Ragnar, and dealing with the expectations that come with being one of many sons. What really struck me about Ubbe is his level-headedness; he doesn’t let the pressure get to him. This calm demeanor ultimately makes him a strong, reliable leader and a remarkably successful explorer. Honestly, of all of Ragnar’s children, Ubbe feels like the one who truly inherited his father’s ambition and intelligence.
Ubbe had to carefully manage the ongoing conflict between Ivar and Lagertha until Ivar was finally overcome. After Bjorn brought the family back together, Ubbe reluctantly took on the temporary leadership of Kattegat, putting his dream of sailing to Iceland on hold.
He took on greater responsibility for his family and eventually journeyed to Iceland and then North America. Known for his intelligence, faithfulness, and kindness, he was a respected figure among Ragnar’s sons.
Lagertha Was A Force to be Reckoned With
Lagertha is a fierce and powerful warrior. As the wife of Ragnar and mother of Bjorn and Gyda, she has faced immense hardship, including fighting in battles, losing her daughter, and experiencing a painful separation from her husband. This separation, however, gave her the opportunity to step out of Ragnar’s shadow and forge her own legacy.
Lagertha ultimately rises to become the Queen of Kattegat, but faces conflict with Ragnar’s sons from his other wife, Aslaug. Even though they blame her for their mother’s death, Lagertha attempts to find common ground with them and unite against shared threats.
Driven by her deep loyalty to Bjorn, she consistently supports his ambitions and works to fulfill the dream Ragnar once had.
Ivar’s Disability Didn’t Stop Him
Despite lacking a sense of morality, Ivar is a surprisingly inspiring figure. Considered an outcast by his brothers, he confronts his physical limitations with fierce defiance and ingenuity. When Floki builds him a war chariot, allowing him to fight alongside them, it fuels an insatiable desire for conquest.
Even though Ivar often acts immaturely and has a temper, he’s a brilliant strategist who excels at fighting both fellow Vikings and the English. While his brothers frequently question his questionable goals, Ivar consistently delivers victories. He wins battles through clever tactics and psychological manipulation, often succeeding against all expectations.
Ivar’s biggest downfall occurs when he focuses too much on conquering new lands instead of building a stable home, as his father intended. This overextension of resources ultimately leads to his defeat.
Ragnar Is An Inspiration for His People
Ragnar is arguably the most impactful character in the series, driving the relentless desire of his family and people to expand their horizons. His greatest strengths weren’t just his ambition to explore and conquer, but also his ability to envision a new home and understand his own capabilities.
I’ve always admired how he grew as a person. When he came back from England with all sorts of treasures, he only kept Athelstan, and that one choice really changed him. Through Athelstan, he started to understand the land, its beliefs, and its people, and they even became close friends. It’s sad to think that later in life, with a much larger family and all his victories, he let his ambition—and the ambition of other Vikings—get the better of him. It’s a reminder that even the wisest can be flawed.
Ragnar’s achievements brought both prosperity and hardship to his family, eventually resulting in his downfall. However, his charisma, drive, and cunning inspired a legendary story and empowered those who followed him.
Bjorn’s Strength And Loyalty Made Him a Reliable Ally
Bjorn quickly proved himself a formidable warrior, earning the nickname Ironside early in life. But it wasn’t just physical strength; the challenges of war and Viking politics helped him mature into a resilient leader, capable of handling the difficulties his father faced.
Bjorn isn’t necessarily known for his intelligence, but he’s driven by a love of adventure and a strong desire to keep his family together. He consistently works to unite them, drawing on his heritage as an Ironside warrior to inspire loyalty. His unwavering devotion to his mother, Lagertha, who fully believes in him, is a major source of his power. Despite his pride, Bjorn can listen to advice when it matters most, making him a powerful leader – as strong as his father.
Bjorn was a strong-willed man, but he was also a good listener. Effective leaders not only inspire, they also admit when they need help and seek advice from those with more knowledge. This willingness to learn from others helped Bjorn navigate the challenges of the Mediterranean and achieve victory in numerous battles.
Rollo’s Character Development Is Unmatched
Many viewers might be surprised to see Ragnar’s brother, Rollo, become so prominent. Initially, Rollo is a strong supporter of Ragnar, providing both strength and skill. However, while his story unfolds in France, he becomes incredibly powerful. He eventually emerges as a respected and influential Frankish noble, wielding significant power against Ivar and Lagertha.
Rollo’s remarkable transformation from a hardened Viking warrior into someone seemingly out of place demonstrates his ability to adjust and succeed even after leaving his old life behind. Despite past conflicts and even battles with his brother Ragnar, Rollo maintained a strong, though complicated, connection through his love for Lagertha and Bjorn, who he believed was his son. However, Bjorn harbored resentment towards Rollo’s long absence, and Rollo was prepared to sacrifice himself to make amends.
Lagertha doesn’t accept his apology and offer of help, but Rollo responds with grace. This shows how much he’s grown during his time away; he used to be very quick to anger when he lived with the Northmen, but now he demonstrates maturity and emotional control.
