6 Hard Sci-Fi Shows That Are 10/10

I’m a huge fan of really good hard sci-fi, but it’s surprisingly rare to find! What I love about it is how much effort goes into making everything scientifically believable – it swaps out magic and fantasy for ideas that could actually happen someday. But because it’s so detailed and tries to be so realistic, I’ve seen a lot of stories get bogged down in overly complicated plots. It’s a tricky balance to strike!

When executed effectively, this type of show can be incredibly satisfying, often even more captivating than typical science fiction television. Ranging from realistic, Earth-based stories to exciting adventures in space, these series provide thoughtful and intelligent viewing experiences while still feeling believable.

Travelers Is An Ingenious Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi

After a global catastrophe, the last of humanity discovers a way to send their minds back in time to the 21st century, inhabiting the bodies of ordinary people. These ‘Travelers,’ armed only with their memories of what’s to come and advanced knowledge, must collaborate to avert the future that destroyed their world.

The show is easy to follow because it focuses on thought-provoking ideas rather than complicated technology like time machines. By grounding itself in realistic scientific possibilities, Travelers stands out as a top-tier example of hard science fiction. And with its exploration of artificial intelligence – a very current topic – it offers a uniquely clever and disturbing take on time travel.

Dark Explores Plausible Scientific Theories

A quiet German town is shaken when children start vanishing, revealing a hidden, troubling history. While the town searches desperately for the missing kids, a diverse group of newcomers discovers they all share a connection – not only to the town’s past secrets, but to a strange, supernatural force that pulls them into a complex and puzzling mystery.

The series features time travel through a wormhole and, while fantastical, it grounds itself in real science, particularly Einstein’s theory of relativity. It’s not the most scientifically accurate time travel story out there, but it does draw inspiration from things we actually observe, like the phases of the moon.

Devs Explores the Consequences of Cause and Effect

The story centers on Lily Chan, a software engineer at a quantum computing company named Amaya. After her boyfriend and coworker, Sergei, gets a mysterious promotion to a hidden team called Devs and then vanishes, Lily starts investigating what happened to him and the secrets surrounding the team.

As a huge sci-fi fan, I’ve gotta say this miniseries really stands out. What I loved most is how grounded it felt – it really digs into the idea that everything happens for a reason, a chain of cause and effect. It’s a really smart show, taking some interesting risks with the genre, and it’s all pulled off beautifully with great acting and a compelling mystery that keeps you hooked.

The Expanse Is a Realistic Sci-Fi Epic

Set hundreds of years in the future, the story centers on detective Joe Miller (Thomas Jane) as he investigates the disappearance of a young woman. His search quickly leads him into a sprawling conflict between Earth and Mars, and with the help of allies, he uncovers a massive conspiracy that could change everything.

Inspired by the novels of James S.A. Corey, this series is a large-scale science fiction story with incredibly detailed worldbuilding and fantastical elements. What truly sets it apart, though, is its dedication to realism. The show thoughtfully incorporates physics, particularly how motion and acceleration affect spaceships and the people on board. While it includes imaginative concepts like the Protomolecule, much of the series is grounded in actual scientific principles.

Severance Isn’t as Far-Fetched as It Appears

Scout, who used to be a history professor, now manages a team at Lumon Industries, a biotech company. He volunteers for a special program that divides his work and personal memories. But when a colleague appears outside of work, Scout and his team start to discover the real purpose of the program and what they actually do for a living.

The show revolves around a cutting-edge medical procedure: implanting a tiny chip into the brain. Though it sounds like science fiction, the creators consulted with medical experts, including Dr. Vijay Agarwal, to ensure a degree of realism. Dr. Agarwal has noted that while the procedure depicted isn’t currently standard practice, it’s becoming increasingly plausible, as some neuroscience facilities have already demonstrated success with inserting small catheters into the brain.

Even if it’s not entirely realistic, the series Severance is a top pick for fans of the thriller/mystery genre. Created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle, it features strong performances from John Turturro and Patricia Arquette, and has received impressive recognition with 15 Primetime Emmy nominations, winning two.

Foundation Turns a Real-World Study Into a Sci-Fi Epic

The series Foundation delves into “psychohistory,” a fascinating concept that blends psychology, history, and sociology to understand and even forecast human behavior. The show uses this idea to explore and shape the destiny of humankind. Boasting stunning visuals, a grand sci-fi narrative, and a dedication to believable science – even speculative science – Foundation is highly recommended for science fiction enthusiasts.
