A highly acclaimed but often debated Western film is returning to streaming services in 2026. Many classic Westerns reflect the biases of their time and contain content that hasn’t aged well, leading to criticism of films starring actors like John Wayne, whose personal views were publicly known, and even some of Clint Eastwood’s earlier work. However, no Western sparks more discussion than Blazing Saddles. Despite being released over 50 years ago, the film remains popular and is once again available to stream.
Mel Brooks’ classic comedy, Blazing Saddles, will be available to stream on HBO Max starting January 1, 2026. Many consider it to be his best film, alongside Spaceballs. Released in 1974, the movie tells the story of Bart (played by Cleavon Little), a Black sheriff appointed to a town filled with prejudice. The film playfully references and spoofs iconic Westerns like The Magnificent Seven, The Searchers, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and The Gunfighter. Gene Wilder co-stars as Jim, an outlaw who becomes a deputy, and the impressive cast also features Slim Pickens, Harvey Korman, Madeline Kahn, Burton Gilliam, Alex Karras, and Mel Brooks himself. Here’s what the movie is about:
This funny Western tells the story of Bart (Cleavon Little), a clever railroad worker who unexpectedly becomes the first Black sheriff of Rock Ridge. The town is about to be wiped off the map to build a railroad, and at first, the residents are prejudiced against their new sheriff. But they quickly realize that Bart – along with his always-tipsy, sharpshooting friend (Gene Wilder) – is their only hope when a gang of criminals arrives to force everyone out of town.
Blazing Saddles remains a beloved comedy spoof. It has an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences even like it more, giving it a 91% score. The film also received three Academy Award nominations in 1975, including nods for Madeline Kahn as Best Supporting Actress, Best Editing, and Best Original Song.
Is ‘Blazing Saddles’ Actually Controversial?

Warner Bros.
It was expected that Blazing Saddles would eventually face calls for cancellation. Surprisingly, though, it has consistently avoided being removed from platforms. The film openly addresses sensitive racial issues, and many of its jokes revolve around them. What sets Blazing Saddles apart from other comedies that have faced cancellation is how it tackles these themes.

Rather than relying on offensive racism, the movie Blazing Saddles cleverly mocks and exposes the prejudices people used to have. The film’s repeated use of a racial slur isn’t meant to be hateful, but to ridicule those who actually used that language and held those bigoted beliefs. Some argue that Blazing Saddles couldn’t be made now, but many fans insist its satirical approach means it remains relevant and untouchable – it ‘can’t be canceled‘.
