Many consider The Rocky Horror Picture Show to be the most iconic cult film of the 1970s, and it’s now available on streaming. It’s easy to say that movies were better ‘back then,’ and sometimes that’s true. The ’70s really were a golden age for film, giving us classics like Jaws, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather, and Taxi Driver. However, while those films are all highly respected, none have left quite the same mark on pop culture or inspired such a dedicated fanbase as The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Fifty years after its theatrical debut, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, currently ranking as the seventh most-watched movie on Hulu. It’s likely you’re already humming a tune from this cult classic! Directed by Jim Sharman and written by Richard O’Brien, the film follows Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) whose unfortunate flat tire leaves them stranded at a bizarre castle, where they become entangled in a wild, otherworldly conflict. Here’s the official story:
The beloved movie begins with the couple Brad and Janet, whose car breaks down during a storm. They stumble upon the strange castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a scientist who defies traditional gender roles. As Brad and Janet’s naiveté fades, they’re introduced to the mansion’s eccentric residents, like a leather-clad biker and a chilling butler. Amidst energetic songs and dances, Frank-N-Furter reveals his newest invention: a physically fit man named Rocky.
The movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show boasted a fantastic cast, including Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, and the unforgettable Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Richard O’Brien, who created the musical, also appeared as Riff Raff, and Meat Loaf played the biker Eddie. Calling Rocky Horror a cult classic doesn’t quite capture how beloved it is. For 50 years, the film has attracted a dedicated fanbase who watch it over and over, and attend sing-along screenings worldwide. That passion continues today, with one Rotten Tomatoes user saying after a recent screening, “It’s a classic for a reason. It really looked great on the big screen.” The stage musical is equally popular, constantly touring and even encouraging playful heckling from the audience. If you’re a fan of Rocky Horror and haven’t seen it live, you should definitely experience it!
‘Rocky Horror’ Has a Much Worse Sequel

20th Century Fox
Similar to many well-loved films, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has a follow-up. Unfortunately, like many movie sequels, it doesn’t measure up. Released in 1981, Shock Treatment brought back Sharman and O’Brien for a new musical, and reintroduced Brad and Janet – though played by different actors, Cliff DeYoung and Jessica Harper.
The movie Shock Treatment features a couple unexpectedly competing on the outlandish game show “Marriage Maze.” Critics didn’t like it – it currently has a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – but viewers seem to enjoy it more, giving it a 62% user rating. Still, it hasn’t reached the same level of popularity as The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
