Goku’s adventures have always been fantastical, but the current fights are far more over-the-top than those in the early days, which focused on traditional martial arts. The arrival of the Saiyans really sparked this change towards bigger and bolder action, fundamentally altering what Dragon Ball is all about.
At first, Saiyans were rare in the world of Dragon Ball, but they’ve become the most powerful and prominent heroes. Whenever a new Saiyan appears, it’s a big deal. However, Dragon Ball hasn’t forgotten about human characters. Humans have constantly worked to match the Saiyans’ strength, and this competition has revealed some interesting contrasts between the two groups.
Saiyans Benefit From An Impressive Range Of Transformations That Humans Lack
Fans first see the incredible Super Saiyan transformation during Goku’s intense fight with Frieza on Planet Namek. Since then, this powerful change has become a defining characteristic of Dragon Ball and its famously over-the-top battles.
Becoming a Super Saiyan used to be a very difficult accomplishment for Saiyans, but it’s now quite common – even young or untrained fighters can achieve this powerful transformation. Besides Super Saiyan, Saiyans also have the Great Ape form, which is even easier to unlock. Unlike becoming a Super Saiyan, a Saiyan doesn’t need any training or skill to transform into a Great Ape.
Unlike many creatures, people have limited ways to significantly increase their physical power. While it’s possible to improve and reach one’s full potential, it doesn’t offer the same kind of instant, controllable boost as some other beings experience. Although humans can theoretically learn incredibly powerful skills like Ultra Instinct or Kaio-Ken, mastering them is extremely difficult.
These transformations are incredibly taxing on the body, especially for humans. Master Roshi’s Max Power form was an early example of this type of muscular transformation, and it could have become common throughout the series. However, instead of being further developed with other characters, it ended up being a unique, isolated instance.
Saiyans Grow Continually Stronger From The Brink Of Defeat With Zenkai Boosts
As a huge Dragon Ball fan, I’m always amazed by how much depth there is to the Saiyan race! They’re just built for fighting, thanks to some incredible genetics. And it’s so cool how the series keeps adding to that – like with Dragon Ball Super introducing S-Cells. These cells seem to be linked to how aggressive a Saiyan is and how easily they can transform into a Super Saiyan. It’s details like this that really make the world so fascinating!
While fighting on Planet Namek, Vegeta demonstrates a remarkable Saiyan ability called the zenkai boost. This special power allows a Saiyan to become significantly stronger after recovering from near-fatal injuries.
Saiyans are already naturally talented fighters, but they have an amazing ability: they actually get stronger after a tough defeat. This means losing a battle can be almost as beneficial for a Saiyan as winning one – it’s a really unique trait!
Saiyans have a unique ability to get stronger from injuries, and they can even take advantage of this to become more powerful. Vegeta does this during the battle on Namek when he asks Krillin to hurt him, then has Dende quickly heal the wound. This allows Vegeta to recover and become even stronger before fighting Frieza.
This system essentially makes every fight a chance to get noticeably stronger afterward, giving Saiyans a huge edge over humans – even without considering their Super Saiyan abilities. A human who barely survives a battle only gains the possibility of learning from the experience, while a Saiyan actively improves their strength.
Saiyans Have An Actual Relationship With Space and Other Species
I remember when Dragon Ball first came out – everything happened right here on Earth! But then Dragon Ball Z totally blew my mind by taking the story into space. Suddenly, we had aliens and characters traveling between planets, which completely changed things for the series. It became this incredible adventure, and honestly, not many humans in that universe actually got to experience that kind of travel!
I’m so excited to talk about this! While most people on Earth are just going about their daily lives, unaware of everything else out there, Krillin and Bulma actually went all the way to Namek! It’s amazing! And you know, it really hits home how much more the Saiyans know about space – they totally understand what other planets have to offer, all the cool stuff we’re just starting to learn about. They’ve been around, you know?
Saiyans have taken over many planets throughout the galaxy, including Planet Plant, Kanassa, Meat, and Arlia. This constant conquering not only allows them to boast about their power, but has also driven significant advancements in their race.
Saiyans often take technology from more developed civilizations – for example, they adopted Scouters, Saibamen, and Battle Armor from the Tuffles. Because humans haven’t done this, they don’t have access to these helpful tools and are at a disadvantage.
Even basic technology like a Scouter gives Saiyans a huge advantage in fights by letting them quickly assess their enemy’s power level. Most humans can’t even sense ki, much less accurately measure someone’s strength. This ability has been honed through the Saiyans’ history of fighting on other planets.
Saiyans Are Conditioned For Intense Training From Youth
Characters in Dragon Ball constantly train to become stronger martial artists, but even with all their effort, they don’t progress as quickly as the Saiyans. This is because Saiyans are born into a warrior culture where strength and social standing are closely linked, and rigorous training starts from a very young age.
Children undergo harsh training from a young age, designed to unlock their potential and prepare them for the future. For example, we see a young Vegeta practicing with Saibamen as part of his rigorous upbringing.
Like Gohan’s tough training in the wilderness, young Saiyans are often sent to harsh planets as a test of maturity. However, these trials are even more brutal and risky. Saiyans strongly emphasize strength in their children, and those who are seen as weak or failures are often punished or banished.
Tarble, Vegeta’s brother, was exiled because he brought shame to their royal family. While humans can be trained intensely from a young age, it’s unusual and not typically part of how they grow up.
Saiyans Adhere To Different Aging Rules & Biology Than Humans
One key difference between Saiyans and humans – particularly those with pure Saiyan bloodlines – is their consistent physical appearance, most notably their black hair. Saiyans also age much differently than humans, impacting how their bodies develop.
Saiyans generally don’t change much in appearance during childhood, typically until they reach their teenage years. This is true even for those who are only half-Saiyan, like Goten and Trunks, who also follow this pattern.
Saiyans are typically known for having one unchanging hairstyle throughout their lives. However, the Dragon Ball series has sometimes gone against this rule, such as when Vegeta grew a mustache and got a drastically different haircut in Dragon Ball GT. Fans often explain this as being acceptable because Dragon Ball GT isn’t considered part of the official storyline.
Despite this general rule, Dragon Ball Super playfully bends it when Goku and Vegeta grow beards after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Ultimately, a Saiyan’s hairstyle is usually consistent and doesn’t dramatically change over time.
