Crime stories are captivating because they often delve into the realities of criminal behavior and the minds of those who commit crimes. It’s a natural human fascination – many people are curious about what drives someone to break the law. Typically, the more shocking or senseless the crime, the more compelling the story becomes. This explains the recent surge in popularity of true crime content.
While many crime movies are works of fiction, that’s actually a big part of what makes the genre so captivating – and sometimes unsettling. Even though these films aren’t based on real life, it’s hard to ignore the fact that violent crime happens all around us. Here are five of the most shocking and disturbing crime films ever made.
The House that Jack Built Cleverly Mixes Crime and Horror Together
Released in 2018, The House That Jack Built is a disturbing crime thriller focusing on Jack, a serial killer who has operated in Washington state for a decade. The movie unfolds through a series of flashbacks, showcasing Jack’s most brutal crimes. The film draws inspiration from Dante’s Inferno, with Jack attempting to rationalize his actions to a figure resembling Virgil.
This movie started as a planned TV series, and some reviewers feel it still shows that. It’s quite long – over two and a half hours – and includes a lot of story. When it was released in 2018, opinions were sharply divided. While many critics praised the film’s style and Matt Dillon’s performance as Jack, the intense violence was a major point of criticism.
The strong negative reaction to The House that Jack Built is precisely why it’s on this list. Jack isn’t simply a killer; he inflicts intense suffering on his victims through torture before ultimately killing them in a very graphic and violent way. He even goes on to desecrate their bodies afterward. For example, he murders his girlfriend’s two children, tortures her, and then kills her as well. Disturbingly, he then turns one of the sons into a sculpture after his death.
American History X is Still Uncomfortably Relevant in 2025
The 1998 crime drama American History X features Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard and Edward Furlong as his brother, Danny. Norton’s performance was widely praised by both audiences and critics, and he even received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
The movie centers on two brothers, Derek and Danny, living in Los Angeles, who become involved with neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups. After Derek is imprisoned for manslaughter, he attempts to reform himself and steer his brother away from the dangerous ideologies that consumed them.
This film earned its place on this list because it doesn’t hold back from showing disturbing and graphic scenes of issues like police brutality, hate crimes, violence, and sexual assault. Given the current political climate in the U.S., the movie feels especially impactful in 2025. It’s a very difficult crime film to watch because it resonates so strongly with real-life issues.
Taxi Driver Created a Lot of Controversy
I’m a huge fan of Taxi Driver, it’s a really powerful film from 1976. It follows Travis Bickle, played by Robert De Niro, a Vietnam vet who becomes a taxi driver partly because he can’t sleep. Driving around New York City, he gets increasingly disturbed by all the crime and corruption he sees. It’s heartbreaking to watch him spiral downwards, going from just being troubled by violent thoughts to actually taking things into his own hands, even going so far as to shoot someone and plot something truly drastic.
Taxi Driver is a widely celebrated and influential film, but it also sparked considerable controversy upon its release. A major point of contention was Jodie Foster’s role as a 12-year-old prostitute, which drew criticism from both audiences and reviewers. The film’s graphic violence, particularly in its final scenes, also received significant backlash.
The film’s intense violence nearly received an X rating and was initially met with disapproval from audiences. Even today, the violent gunfight remains difficult to watch. However, the most well-known controversy surrounding Taxi Driver is its connection to John Hinckley Jr., who was inspired by the film when he attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
Se7en’s Ending is Morbid & Bleak
David Fincher directs this film starring Brad Pitt as the eager, new detective David Mills and Morgan Freeman as his experienced partner, Detective Lieutenant William Somerset. The story centers around Mills and Somerset’s hunt for John Doe, a puzzling serial killer who targets people based on the seven deadly sins. Each victim represents and is killed in a way that reflects one of these sins.
Mills and Somerset identify victims representing gluttony, greed, and sloth, bringing them closer to understanding the killer’s motive – the seven deadly sins. The scene involving the victim of lust is particularly disturbing and memorable. With the discovery of the pride victim, only two sins – envy and wrath – remain unidentified.
The violence in the film only makes things worse. Without giving away any spoilers, the ending is incredibly difficult to watch. Studio executives at New Line Cinema initially wanted a less upsetting conclusion, but director David Fincher fought to keep the shocking and painful ending, which ultimately became one of cinema’s most famous plot twists.
Funny Games is a Satirical Exploration of Sadistic Torture
Michael Haneke’s 1997 Austrian film, Funny Games, is a chilling crime thriller and horror movie. He later remade it almost identically in 2007 for an American audience, keeping the same title. The story centers around George Schober and his family – his wife, Anna, and their son, Georgie – who go on vacation to a lakeside house in Austria. Along with their dog, they arrive expecting a relaxing getaway, but they soon find themselves facing a terrifying ordeal.
Paul and Peter immediately took over the Schobers’ vacation home, acting as if they owned the place. What initially seemed like simple rudeness quickly escalated into something far more sinister. They brutally killed the family’s dog and then cruelly forced Anna to find its body. This was just the beginning, as Paul and Peter subjected the family to a series of increasingly dangerous and twisted games, tormenting them for their own amusement.
The film Funny Games is deeply disturbing because it holds nothing back, subjecting even innocent characters like Georgie to brutal violence. The perpetrators, Paul and Peter, remain intentionally mysterious – we never learn their motives or any genuine details about their pasts. They frequently disrupt the viewing experience by speaking directly to the audience, adding to the unsettling nature of the film. What’s most striking about this violent movie is that it offers no easy answers or resolutions.
