5 Highest Combat Powers in Kaiju No. 8 (So Far), Ranked

The power levels in the anime have increased consistently, with the courageous soldiers of the JAKDF showing amazing strength during the fight against the kaiju. Shonen fans are eager to find out who is currently the strongest in the Kaiju No. 8 anime and how their power compares to later stages of the manga. As of the end of Season 2, and looking at the series as a whole, five members of the Defense Force stand out as the most powerful.

A lot of praise goes to Kafka Hibino, being a unique individual with his kaiju abilities, and Reno Ishikawa has also been performing impressively. These two soldiers are close friends and skilled fighters, but even they aren’t strong enough to rank among the top five in terms of combat power when using those advanced suits. Instead, Kaiju No. 8 fans will be watching the Defense Force’s top five members and what they’re capable of when facing terrifying threats like Kaiju No. 9 and its many monsters. This includes one former soldier who, in his prime, was a source of great pride for the JAKDF.

Kikoru Shinomiya is Quickly Living Up to Her Parents’ Reputation

Many shonen action anime include the “young genius” character – someone incredibly skilled from the start. Fans will remember characters like Naruto‘s Sasuke Uchiha, Demon Slayer‘s Muichiro Tokito, and My Hero Academia‘s Shoto Todoroki, and now Kaiju No. 8 has its own. In the constant battle to defend Tokyo and other cities from dangerous kaiju, the Defense Force always needs recruits who can compete with their best commanders, and Kikoru Shinomiya is that promising new talent. As of the end of Season 2 of Kaiju No. 8‘s anime, Kikoru might be ranked last among the JAKDF’s top five fighters in terms of overall power, but her development is still very encouraging. She was the strongest in Season 1, easily surpassing both Kafka and Reno, and she’s continued to improve, currently utilizing 84% of her suit’s capabilities.

In Season 2, Kikoru became an even more capable soldier through challenging battles and personal tragedy. Witnessing her father, Isao, fall in battle against Kaiju No. 9 only strengthened her determination to improve her abilities as a Kaiju fighter, driving her to train relentlessly. It’s always impactful to see naturally gifted individuals like Kikoru dedicate themselves to rigorous training, and it also highlights just how serious the situation has become. Consequently, Kikoru has been training with Gen to unlock even greater power, refusing to rely on her existing strengths. She now expertly uses her axe-shaped Numbers Weapon Four, which proved effective against Kaiju No. 15, and eventually, in the manga, Kikoru decisively defeated that creature for good.

Isao Shinomiya Will Always Be Remembered as a Powerhouse Defense Force Commander

For a while in the Kaiju No. 8 anime, Isao Shinomiya was one of the most powerful soldiers in the JAKDF, and he also held the high position of Director General. Some viewers drew parallels between him and Endeavor from My Hero Academia, seeing him as a strict, uncompromising parent who pushed his child relentlessly to become a top fighter. Isao made a strong impression on Kaiju No. 8 fans when he fought Kafka Hibino in a closed arena and lived to tell the tale, leading many to believe he’d be a major defense against the kaiju in Season 2. However, when the moment came, Isao fought Kaiju No. 9 with the full power of Numbers Weapon 2, nearly defeating it, but ultimately Kaiju No. 9 found a way to overcome him and absorb his abilities.

That surprising defeat was a dark moment in Kaiju No. 8‘s second season, signaling a scary new period where everyone is vulnerable-even the powerful Director General. It was still exciting to see Isao fighting and using his incredible strength to help against the kaiju, instead of just bossing Kafka around. Isao also performed exceptionally well with his suit, achieving 80% of its maximum potential while using Numbers Weapon 2.

Soshiro Hoshina Wields the Awesome Power of Kaiju No. 10

Soshiro Hoshina is the vice-commander of the Third Division, working under Mina Ashiro, and he’s quickly shown Kaiju No. 8 fans that he deserves the position. Even though he often acts relaxed and playful, Soshiro is a very skilled fighter and is capable of training Kafka in combat. By Season 2, he was noticeably better than Kafka during their practice sparring sessions in human form, and in actual battles, Soshiro fights with bladed weapons to incredible effect. Importantly, he was also the one who battled Kaiju No. 10, which demonstrates his strength considerably.

In Season 2 of Kaiju No. 8, Soshiro took ownership of Numbers Weapon 10, creating a powerful, but somewhat comical, partnership with the remnants of Kaiju No. 10. Some viewers have noted that Soshiro almost seems like a different person when using the weapon, effectively wearing Numbers Weapon 10 as a suit – even including a tail! With this amazing ability, Soshiro quickly proved himself to be one of the most skilled fighters in Season 2, battling new numbered kaiju. He’s currently able to utilize 92% of the suit’s full potential.

Mina Ashiro Sets a Scarily High Bar For Everyone to Clear

Mina Ashiro and Kafka were childhood friends, and Mina always wanted to battle kaiju with him. However, she joined the Defense Force several years before Kafka did and quickly became a high-ranking officer. While Kafka is a strong half-other as Kaiju No. 8, Season 2 of Kaiju No. 8 shows that Mina is the more accomplished soldier. She’s exceptionally skilled at using her suit and weapons. Specifically, Mina is a remarkably accurate and unflinching sniper, capable of destroying kaiju from far away. Throughout her career, she’s defeated hundreds of kaiju and now commands the Third Division with great respect. Season 2 of the anime continues to demonstrate why Mina is so well-regarded within the JAKDF.

Season 2 continued to showcase Mina’s strengths. She consistently changed the course of battles with her accurate, long-distance attacks and established herself as a vital leader following the tragic death of Isao Shinomiya. What makes her even more impressive is that, unlike powerful fighters such as Kikoru and Soshiro, Mina doesn’t use a Numbers Weapon during combat. Instead, she depends on her incredibly precise sniping skills and her naturally exceptional abilities. Mina’s combat suit release rate is among the highest in the entire Defense Force, reaching an amazing 96% – a level most JAKDF soldiers can only dream of.

Gen Narumi Is the JAKDF’s Top Soldier, No Matter His Slacker Attitude

As Kaiju No. 8‘s anime progresses, Gen Narumi has proven to be the JAKDF’s most skilled kaiju fighter, demonstrating incredible power and technique against both regular and numbered kaiju. While Gen admits he’d lose to Isao, and Mina is undeniably strong even without a Numbers Weapon, he still remains the Defense Force’s top fighter. Introduced midway through Season 2, Gen’s laid-back and comical everyday personality is a stark contrast to his impressive fighting abilities. He’s another shonen character whose personality hides his true strength, much like Shikamaru Nara in Naruto or Captain Shunsui Kyoraku in Bleach. Gen enjoys video games and ordering cheap items online, but when duty calls, he fully lives up to his rank and exceeds expectations.

These are challenging times, especially with the appearance of additional numbered kaiju fighting with Kaiju No. 9. This makes battlefield strategists like Gen incredibly valuable to the Defense Force. He expertly uses Numbers Weapon 1, allowing him to anticipate enemy actions by reading brain patterns and creating attacks that are impossible to avoid. This gives Gen a distinct edge in combat, as he doesn’t rely solely on speed and strength-though he certainly has plenty of both, along with great stamina. Early in his career, Gen demonstrated his potential by unleashing 24% of his suit’s power as a newcomer, and now he can access 98% of its capabilities-a remarkable feat that even experienced soldiers like Mina and Soshiro admire-and maybe even feel a bit envious of.
