Netflix has produced many memorable horror series, but some, like Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, haven’t gotten the attention they deserve over time. Netflix’s approach to releasing content is a bit of a mixed bag. While they consistently offer a huge variety of shows, this also means some great titles can get overlooked.
It’s really frustrating as a movie and TV fan because so many great shows just disappear! They don’t get the attention they deserve, simply because the streaming algorithms bury them. I was just reading about some of the best Netflix thrillers nobody seems to remember – seriously, modern classics starring people like Andrew Scott, Emma Stone, and Jonah Hill that just got lost in the shuffle. It’s a shame!
Marianne
Many Netflix horror shows have followed a similar pattern, and 2019’s Marianne is a prime example. The French series started with a great idea: horror novelist Emma Larsimon, played by Victoire Du Bois, discovered that the terrifying characters she wrote about were actually coming to life. When it was released, the show quickly captivated audiences with its spooky, quick pace and genuinely frightening moments.
Honestly, I was really surprised to find out that Marianne hasn’t stuck around in the cultural conversation the way other horror shows have. You look at something like The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix, and even shows that didn’t get as much buzz, like The Midnight Club, are still talked about. But Marianne, despite having some genuinely terrifying moments and building an incredibly creepy atmosphere, seems to have just… disappeared from everyone’s memory. It’s a shame, because it really delivered on the scares!
The Watcher
Ryan Murphy’s 2022 series, The Watcher, was inspired by a widely-shared article in The Cut detailing a real, ongoing stalking case. The show centers on a couple who begin receiving unsettling letters from someone calling themselves “The Watcher” after moving into their dream home.
Even though the true story behind this series is disturbing, it was the impressive cast that really drew viewers in. With Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, and Mia Farrow (known from Rosemary’s Baby) starring, The Watcher unexpectedly brought together a group of well-known actors for this unusual and suspenseful psychological thriller.
Although we may never know who ‘The Watcher’ actually is, it’s pretty clear why the show didn’t resonate with viewers. Because the story it was based on didn’t have a definitive ending, the show’s finale felt less thought-provoking and more just… unsatisfying.
The ending of The Watcher didn’t quite deliver, leaving the series feeling ultimately unsatisfying. All the mysteries and strange characters, which seemed intriguing during the show, now felt pointless because the conclusion wasn’t strong enough to tie everything together. It felt like a long story with a disappointing finish.
The Haunting of Bly Manor
Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House set a high bar for his future work. It was both a deeply moving story about family and a truly frightening horror series, successfully blending these two seemingly different genres.
It wasn’t surprising that The Haunting of Bly Manor, which premiered in 2020, received criticism for its story and characters. The show was constantly measured against the success of The Haunting of Hill House. Based on Henry James’ Turn of the Screw, The Haunting of Bly Manor was a spooky drama set in the 1980s.
The show centers around two children and their caretaker who find themselves haunted while isolated at a large estate. While the original story intentionally left the existence of ghosts ambiguous, the longer format of The Haunting of Bly Manor required the series to offer more definitive answers.
The series began to lose its way here, and while not all the criticism was fair, some of it was justified. A major flaw was the show’s portrayal of class, and deviating significantly from the original story didn’t help either. Ultimately, though, it was the depressing ending that caused this miniseries to be quickly overlooked compared to other works by the same creator.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet Of Curiosities
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities delivered on its promise of being a strange and fascinating collection of horror stories. It felt like a more sophisticated, story-driven version of shows like HBO’s Tales from the Crypt. The series, hosted by del Toro, featured eight episodes, each directed by a different filmmaker.
The episodes varied greatly in style, from the deeply sad and poetic “The Murmuring” by Jennifer Kent, who directed The Babadook, to the wild and funny horror-comedy “The Viewing” from Panos Cosmatos, the director of Mandy. Each episode uniquely combined elements of horror, comedy, science fiction, fantasy, and mystery, offering viewers something fresh, often dreamlike, and consistently unforgettable.
Despite having a talented cast and acclaimed directors, it’s surprising that Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities didn’t get a second season after its release in October 2022. It appears this horror series will unfortunately be one of Netflix’s overlooked gems.
