Despite being a brilliant blend of Western and science fiction, the Prime Video series Outer Range didn’t initially attract a large audience. Many Prime Video shows have been overlooked, including the spooky horror series The Rig and the gripping crime drama The Devil’s Hour. But none of them were as unfairly treated as Outer Range.

The 2022 series Outer Range centers on Josh Brolin as Royal Abbot, a Wyoming rancher. While fighting a land dispute with the neighboring Tillerson family, Royal discovers a strange, dark void on his property. Around this time, a puzzling newcomer named Autumn arrives at the ranch.

When Royal’s daughter-in-law, Rebecca, vanishes with the arrival of autumn, he’s forced to confront a mysterious emptiness. This sets the scene for Outer Range, a truly original TV show. It expertly blends the dramatic feel of Yellowstone and its related series with clear science fiction themes, making it one of the best shows of the last decade.

Outer Range Successfully Blended Sci-Fi with the Western

As a big fan of shows that blend genres, I was completely hooked by Outer Range. It’s got this really strange, dreamlike quality that reminded me of Twin Peaks, and the story is fantastic. It’s honestly the best mix of sci-fi and Western elements I’ve seen since Firefly went off the air way back in 2002. Josh Brolin is great as the troubled Royal, but Imogen Poots absolutely shines – every time she’s on screen, she just steals the show as this mysterious wanderer, Autumn.

As someone who loves a good story, I was really happy with how the first season of Outer Range wrapped up. It actually explained things! A lot of shows these days seem content to just pose mysteries, but this one delivered answers. That made the second season even better, honestly. Instead of just being intriguing and weird, the story became much clearer and the stakes felt way higher – it was a really satisfying evolution.

The pacing in Outer Range felt a bit off at times, with the show often spending a lot of time on minor characters before connecting them to the central story. While the premise might remind you of a sci-fi version of Yellowstone, and it did manage to create a similar level of suspense seen in Yellowstone‘s spin-offs, Outer Range ultimately aimed for something stranger and more imaginative.

Comparing this unusual Western to Twin Peaks makes sense, as both shows start with simple ideas and quickly become strangely captivating. However, Outer Range ultimately provides a satisfying conclusion, and the time invested in characters like Rhett, played by Lewis Pullman, is worthwhile.

Outer Range Was Quietly Canceled After Only Two Seasons

Despite strong reviews, especially for its second season, and a cliffhanger ending that hinted at future seasons, the show Outer Range was unexpectedly canceled in June 2024, disappointing viewers who were hoping to see the story develop further.

The cancellation was sad news for fans, but not unexpected given recent trends in television. The show’s style is most similar to Westworld, the popular Western sci-fi series inspired by the novel and 1973 film of the same name.

Despite initial praise and predictions it could fill the void left by Game of Thrones, Westworld only ran for four seasons. Outer Range, with its large ensemble cast and unique style, had the potential to attract a similar audience, but faced a significant challenge.

Outer Range Proves Sci-fi Westerns Are Still A Hard Sell

As a reviewer, I’ve been consistently impressed with Outer Range, and it really feels like Prime Video’s hidden gem. While critics actually favored it over Yellowstone and its many spinoffs, it just never quite broke through into mainstream conversation. I think the show’s biggest challenge – and maybe its strength – is that it’s hard to pin down. It’s a unique mix of genres that doesn’t neatly fit into any one box, and that probably kept some viewers from fully embracing it.

As a big fan of both sci-fi and Westerns, I’ve noticed something a little disheartening: blending the two just doesn’t seem to work consistently. We’ve seen a lot of attempts – like Wild Wild West, Cowboys and Aliens, and even The Postman – fall flat. Even something as beloved as Firefly struggled to really connect with a broad audience. You could point to Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop as a success, but honestly, that show is more of a stylish, gritty thriller than a straight-up sci-fi Western.

Despite the quality of shows like Outer Range, it’s proving difficult for Western-sci-fi hybrids to really connect with audiences. As a result, this excellent Prime Video series flew under the radar for many, even though it skillfully combines the Western and sci-fi genres.

Although streaming services have allowed for more shows to be made, some trends still don’t catch on with viewers. Despite being a unique and well-made show, the limited audience for Outer Range suggests that the combination of science fiction and Westerns isn’t currently very popular.
