No matter what you’re in the mood for – a scary movie, an action-packed thriller, or a funny comedy – Prime Video has you covered. With tons of choices available, here are three great movie recommendations for this week to suit every taste.
Escape From New York (1981)
John Carpenter is famous for directing the classic horror film Halloween. While many horror fans rewatch Halloween every year as October approaches, another excellent movie directed by Carpenter is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
I absolutely love Escape from New York! It’s a really intense action movie set in a dark, futuristic world. The story centers around Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell – he’s this tough ex-soldier who’s locked up for a major crime. But the government needs his help! The President’s plane goes down on Manhattan Island, which has been turned into a maximum-security prison, and Snake is the only one they think can go in and rescue him.
This film proved Carpenter was just as skilled at directing action movies as he was horror films. It also launched Kurt Russell into superstardom and even inspired the video game Metal Gear Solid years later. Though primarily a fun, escapist adventure, it’s a genuinely thrilling action movie with memorable scenes.
A follow-up film, Escape from L.A., wasn’t as original or creative as the first, Escape from New York. The original movie is still considered the better of the two and holds up remarkably well, even decades after its 1981 release.
Candyman (1992)
If you’re searching for a truly scary Halloween movie, you can now watch Candyman on Prime Video. Released in 1992, when slasher films weren’t as popular, it’s a remarkably well-crafted story that’s earned its place as a horror classic.
As a huge horror fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the legend of Candyman. It’s a really disturbing story about a talented Black artist back in the 1800s. He was incredibly gifted, but when he fell in love with a white woman, her father had him brutally murdered by a lynch mob. Now, the legend says if you say ‘Candyman’ five times while looking in a mirror, his vengeful ghost appears and… well, let’s just say it doesn’t end well for you. It’s a truly haunting tale of racial violence and the power of urban legends.
This story is a fresh take on the traditional Bloody Mary legend, but instead of the usual ghost, it features Candyman—a terrifying figure with a hook for a hand and a body swarming with bees. The movie Candyman made Tony Todd a horror icon, and fans still celebrate his performance and the film’s impact today.
My Name Is Bruce (2007)
If you’re a horror fan looking for something funny and not too scary, check out My Name is Bruce, a little-known 2007 movie on Prime Video. It stars horror legend Bruce Campbell, who plays a comedic, over-the-top version of himself.
Bruce Campbell directs and stars as himself in this movie, playing a version of himself who’s just finished filming. He’s unexpectedly kidnapped and brought to a remote mining town where the locals mistake him for his character, Ash Williams, from the Evil Dead films. They desperately need his help to fight a dangerous Chinese god of the dead.
This movie hilariously explores the strange world of fame and how easily we blur the lines between what’s real and what’s not. Bruce Campbell plays a version of himself, and he’s thrown into a genuinely scary, supernatural situation where he has to rely on his wit and, yes, a bit of ego to survive. It’s likely the most laugh-out-loud funny horror comedy you’ll find on Prime Video this week.
