’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’s Continues to Stumble at the Box Office

The disappointing ticket sales for this month’s horror sequel could mean the end of the series. While the newest film from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland has received excellent reviews from critics and moviegoers, it hasn’t attracted a large enough audience in theaters.

The latest movie in the planned 28 Years Later series has seen a significant drop in ticket sales, falling 71% over the past two weekends and earning only $635,000 last week. So far, The Bone Temple has made $20 million in the US and $25 million worldwide, but it cost $63 million to produce. Despite hopes that good reviews would help the movie gain momentum, it hasn’t performed well and appears to be failing, much like the characters trying to escape a zombie outbreak.

These recent box office struggles could threaten the planned third and final 28 Years Later movie. Although the film has been officially approved, with writer Alex Garland already working on the script and director Danny Boyle expected to return, a significant financial failure could make Sony Pictures reconsider. However, there’s a promising element – a connection to an Oscar-winning success – that might prevent the film from being canceled.

The Inclusion of Cillian Murphy Will Hopefully Save ’28 Years Later 3′ From the Axe

Searchlight Pictures

Nia DaCosta directs The Bone Temple, a continuation of last year’s 28 Years Later. The film focuses on Spike (Alfie Williams), a child survivor now under the influence of Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell). Dr. Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) also makes a discovery about the infected that could drastically alter everything. In a surprising turn of events, Cillian Murphy reprises his role as Jim from the original 28 Days Later – and will be a key character in the planned third and final film.

Despite not performing as well at the box office, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has received positive reviews, with scores of 93% from critics and 88% from audiences. Fans are eager to see what happens with the character Jim in the next installment, and many believe bringing back Cillian Murphy (known for Oppenheimer and Peaky Blinders) along with Jim could be the key to a successful 28 Years Later 3. Some point to poor marketing and a January release as reasons for The Bone Temple’s financial struggles, but a sequel featuring these popular stars seems like a guaranteed hit.

Although Jim’s specific part in 28 Years Later 3 is still unknown – the end of The Bone Temple only hinted at his involvement by showing he’d be joining Spike’s storyline – director Nia DaCosta has confidently stated the third film is “amazing.” Hopefully, audiences will get to see just how good it is.
