As a big fan of the 28 Years Later films, I was really disappointed to hear things aren’t looking great for the future of the series. Apparently, even though The Bone Temple got fantastic reviews from both critics and audiences, it didn’t make enough money in theaters. Sony did announce they were planning a third movie, but now it sounds like they’re seriously reconsidering, and aren’t in any hurry to move forward. It’s a shame, because I was really excited to see where they’d take the story next!
Sources at World of Reel report that the disappointing box office performance of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has caused Sony to slow down development on the third film, which was intended to give Cillian Murphy a larger role. While the project hasn’t been cancelled, the studio isn’t prioritizing it, so fans might have to wait a considerable amount of time for it to be made. World of Reel also notes that Netflix is interested in acquiring the next 28 Years Later movie, but director Danny Boyle is committed to a theatrical release.
The ending of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple hinted that the next film would center on the main character from the original 28 Days Later, and this was a key reason people were excited about the new trilogy, created by Alex Garland, Danny Boyle, and Nia DaCosta. Before The Bone Temple was released, Sony seemed confident about the future of the series, but that’s no longer the case. Now, Sony might decide to sell the rights to the sequel to another company. They’ve done this before – remember selling KPop Demon Hunters to Netflix, which became their most popular original movie ever.
