2026’s The Mandalorian Movie Officially Revives a 48-Year Luke Skywalker Tradition

The upcoming 2026 movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, will continue the story of Din Djarion and Grogu, and it’s bringing back a tradition that hasn’t been seen in Star Wars for 48 years. After being separated to train with Luke Skywalker and develop his Jedi abilities, Grogu and Din Djarion will reunite on the big screen next May, marking the first time Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian series – previously exclusive to streaming – reaches theaters.

Although Luke Skywalker won’t be physically in the next movie, his influence will still be present. The story will continue a pattern seen throughout the Star Wars films, focusing on the training of new apprentices – a tradition closely tied to Luke’s legacy.

I was chatting with Jon Favreau recently, and he gave me a good sense of where he’s taking The Mandalorian with the planned movie. He described it as being all about characters evolving and learning – specifically, the idea of mentorship, and one generation passing on their knowledge and skills to the next. It sounds like we’ll really see Din Djarin and Grogu’s relationship deepen and develop on the big screen.

At its heart, the film focuses on the central relationship between the characters as they embark on a journey together. Star Wars is fundamentally about characters developing and changing – for better or worse – and about passing knowledge from one generation to the next through mentorship. The characters experience significant growth throughout the story.

This likely refers to the growing connection between Grogu and Din Djarin, mirroring the earlier bond Grogu shared with Luke Skywalker as seen in episodes of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

A new season of The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive on May 22, 2026. Created by co-creator Jon Favreau, the story follows Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu as they take on bounty-hunting missions for the New Republic, continuing their journey across the galaxy.

Every Luke-Related Master-Apprentice Relationship To Date

Luke & Obi-Wan

The classic mentorship between Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars set the standard for Jedi relationships for decades. The story begins with young Luke, after reaching adulthood and receiving a mysterious message carried by two droids, seeking out Obi-Wan Kenobi for guidance.

This scene marks the beginning of Luke’s real journey, as Obi-Wan explains that he’s meant for more than just farm work and introduces him to the path of the Jedi. Even after his death, Obi-Wan continued to guide Luke, offering lessons and helping him defeat the evil Emperor and save the galaxy.

Luke & Yoda

Following Obi-Wan’s death, Luke needs to find a new teacher to finish his Jedi training. This leads him to the enigmatic Master Yoda, a small but incredibly powerful Jedi who now lives on the swampy planet of Dagobah. Yoda agrees to train Luke in the ways of the Jedi, but only if Luke is fully dedicated.

Luke receives crucial training from the wise Yoda, but is interrupted when his friends reach out to him through the Force. He later returns to find Yoda has passed away, joining Obi-Wan as a spirit. These experiences deeply teach Luke what it truly means to be a Jedi Knight.

Luke & Grogu

In the world of Star Wars, Grogu is the first student Luke Skywalker trains on his own. Having learned from his own masters, Yoda and Obi-Wan, Luke passes on his knowledge to the young Grogu after the two are separated from Din Djarin, who had been acting as Grogu’s guardian.

However, their time apart doesn’t last, as Din Djarin finds Grogu and takes him back, leaving Luke Skywalker’s Jedi training behind.

Luke & Ben Solo

After the events of The Mandalorian, Luke Skywalker becomes a skilled Jedi Master and takes on several students, including Ben Solo (who fans have recently campaigned to see more of). His sister, Leia, asks him to train Ben as a Jedi, but things don’t go well.

As Luke continued his training with Ben, he sensed a growing darkness inside him. Fearing what Ben might become, Luke decided he had to stop him. But the night Luke planned to act, Ben woke up and, in a panic, caused their shelter to collapse on them both before fleeing and ultimately becoming the villain Kylo Ren.

Luke & Rey

Later in the sequel trilogy, Luke reluctantly takes on a new apprentice: Rey, a young woman who rose from humble beginnings to become a hero for the Resistance. After years of self-imposed exile following the tragedy involving his nephew, Ben Solo, Rey seeks him out, hoping he will train her as a Jedi.

At first, he rejected her idea, but he ultimately agreed and began training Daisy Ridley’s character as a Jedi Master. Using this training and drawing on the strength of all past Jedi, she finally defeats the resurrected Emperor Palpatine and then establishes a new Jedi Order.
